Prince Harry’s upcoming re-release of his controversial memoir, Spare, is being viewed as a "thorn in the side" of the Royal Family.

Despite earlier hopes for reconciliation, tensions have resurfaced following Prince Harry’s secret return to the UK for the funeral of his uncle, Lord Robert Fellowes, in Norfolk this week.

The Duke of Sussex and his older brother, Prince William, attended the funeral but reportedly did not speak to each other.

Local attendees in Snettisham observed that the brothers "kept their distance," with no interaction between them.

Royal commentator Michael Cole described the atmosphere as "frosty”.

“For the first time in nearly a year, the two princes were in the same room together in the church, apparently sitting discreetly apart at the back,” he said.

“There was no interaction - to say it was minimal, it wasn't minimal, it was invisible - frosty with absolutely no warmth at all."

The re-release of Spare, without any new chapters or updates, has added another layer of tension.

Cole said that while some might interpret this as a peace offering, the lack of updates could also suggest Prince Harry’s discomfort with the book's original content, which sparked significant controversy within the Royal Family.

"That’s one of the bones of contention that lies between them," Cole said.

"It caused an awful lot of trouble. It was very unkind to the present king, and of course William and the Princess of Wales."

The strained relationship between Prince Harry and William has been well-documented since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down as senior royals in 2020.

Cole said the rift is deep between the brothers, and that any reconciliation may take a "very long time."

He added: "At the moment, they were in the same building but they were still a country mile apart.

“It’s going to take a long time, and quite frankly, I can't see it happening, maybe never."

Referring to Prince Harry’s return to the UK, Cole suggested that Prince Harry might feel a sense of nostalgia for his former life.

"The fact that the prince came back for the funeral, he must have felt some pangs of the old life he lived.

“He knows the Sandringham estate very well, he had lots of friends up there, loved the shooting, loved everything about this country."
