Although Prince Harry remained close to Princess Diana’s family after his mother’s death, and is still close to them to this day, it has been claimed that the Spencers warned the prince that Meghan Markle would “not fit in” with the Royal Family.

In Tom Bower’s book, Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War between the Windsors, it has been claimed that Diana’s brother Earl Spencer was asked to speak to Harry about his relationship with Meghan before the pair married.

Charles Spencer and Diana's sisters, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Baroness Jane Fellowes, reportedly thought Meghan would struggle to fit in with the Royal Family.

The book also claimed that Diana’s siblings struggled to see any similarities between Diana and Meghan Markle, despite Harry’s claims that the two were alike.

Tom wrote: "Harry assumed that Diana's family and friends would see a similarity between Diana and his fiancee. Both, he said, shared the same problems. He was disappointed. No one agreed that his vulnerable mother had anything in common with his girlfriend."

Tom continued in the book: “More discomforting for him, they thought Meghan would not fit in with the Royal Family.

"Their unease was voiced by Charles Spencer, Diana's brother. At William's request, Spencer weighed in.

"Three times married, Spencer cautioned his nephew to reconsider his haste towards marriage.

"His advice provoked a bitter reaction. 'This was going to be really hard,' Harry would later reflect on establishing Meghan's place in the family."

Despite hesitations from both sides of the family during his relationship with Meghan Markle, the couple got married in 2018 before welcoming their first child Archie in 2019.

Since then, the couple have moved to California and had their second child Lilibet, who is now three.

In a recent statement, Prince Harry - who will be celebrating his 40th birthday this Sunday - said his children are his greatest gift.

The Duke of Sussex will be celebrating his birthday with his wife, children and American friends, with no members of the Royal Family or the Spencer family set to fly over for the big day.
