BBC viewers were left stunned when The Capture returned for its third series last month and a pivotal character was killed off in the opening episode.

The programme's lead actress, Holliday Grainger, has now confessed that despite being aware her co-star was facing a dramatic exit, she had no idea how events would unfold.

The much-loved thriller, which last aired in 2022, launched at the beginning of March as audiences witnessed Rachel Carey (Holliday Grainger) back in the thick of it, poised to initiate Operation Veritas, a groundbreaking new camera network capable of detecting live deepfakes in real time.

However, during a press conference on the BBC show, matters took a catastrophic turn when Home Secretary Isaac Turner (Paapa Essiedu) took to the stage and was assassinated.

As Isaac was shot in the head, Rachel found herself the crucial eyewitness, after the gunman chose not to eliminate her before making his escape, reports the Mirror.

Paapa has been a central figure in the programme since the second series, leaving many BBC devotees devastated by his abrupt departure.

In a behind-the-scenes clip posted to BBC iPlayer's Instagram account, viewers heard directly from both Holliday and Paapa regarding Isaac's sudden death.

Holliday confessed: "During the press conference, Isaac Turner, her friend, colleague, and confidant, was brutally murdered. I did know Paapa was gonna die, I just didn't know how he was gonna die."

Speaking about his departure, Paapa said: "It's a bit sad, you know. It's such an operatic and explosive moment so early in the season. I'm sad to be seeing the end of Isaac, but I think it's a fitting way to end his story."

Reflecting on his final scenes in the programme, Paapa noted that it was highly technical, which provided the chance for everyone in the crew to perform at the peak of their abilities.

Holliday revealed that her character rushed towards the killer after her friend was shot, emphasising that viewers had never previously seen Carey with a gun.

She added: "I definitely would watch the show if I wasn't in it, so it's quite exciting to be part of it. "

Nevertheless, when Isaac was killed off in the opening episode, fans were left furious, with many disappointed to see the character exit the series.

One person on X said: "Any believe they did Isaac Turner and Frank Napier like that." While another commented: "ISAAC DEAD?????????????? #TheCapture."

Someone else wrote: "I JUST SCREAMED!!!!!! OMG ISAAC ." As another viewer wrote: "THEY'VE BEEN PLOTTING TO KILL ISAAC FOR A YEARRRRRRRRRRRRRRR."

Following the shocking scenes which aired at the beginning of March, show creator Ben Chanan explained his decision to kill Isaac off.

Speaking to Radio Times, he said: "You see why in episode 6, he, according to certain forces, had to go.

"But, it's really all about kickstarting the next journey for Carey. She obviously really got on with Isaac, and she cares about him, and there's even a little frisson between them. So, when he gets shot and killed, it's personal. It feels personal to Carey."

The Capture Series 3 airs weekly on Sundays at 9pm on BBC One
