Ryan Coogler's reimagining of The X-Files has received an exciting development.

The refreshed sci-fi mystery series was initially revealed in 2023, with the celebrated filmmaker releasing his acclaimed period horror blockbuster Sinners in the interim.

Almost three years on, the venture has finally secured a pilot commission from streaming platform Hulu, with Jennifer Yale (The Copenhagen Test) joining as showrunner.

The Black Panther director will pen and helm the opening instalment, which will feature Danielle Deadwyler (The Piano Lesson) as an FBI agent examining paranormal phenomena.

A synopsis via Deadline reveals the programme will chronicle "two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents - one played by Deadwyler - [who] form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.", reports the Mirror.

Deadwyler faces a busy year as she's set to appear in the HBO comedy programme Rooster alongside Steve Carell as well as Euphoria's third series. Her X-Files counterpart remains unannounced.

The original programme featured David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, a believer and a sceptic who examine unsolved cases known as X-Files.

Initially broadcast from 1993-2002 across nine series, the show is broadly regarded as one of the finest programmes ever made, with Radio Times declaring the first episode 'the greatest pilot in TV history'. It came back for two additional series in 2016 and 2018.

One Redditor proclaimed it's "never to be dethroned", whilst another concurred: "This show is my #1 of all time. It has its flaws but this is the show I go to every night.

"If TV died as a whole entirely and I was stranded on a desert island, this would be my one and only choice."

Meanwhile, an X user described it as "literally the best show ever made, so beautifully shot and a killer soundtrack!"

The reboot faces a formidable legacy to honour, though fortunately director Coogler possesses sufficient credentials to satisfy fans' elevated expectations.

His most recent film, Sinners, featuring Michael B Jordan as twin gangsters who confront a terrifying vampire cult in 1930s Mississippi, was declared the best film of 2025 by the African American Film Critics Association.

The critics' consensus on Rotten Tomatoes states: "A rip-roaring fusion of masterful visual storytelling and toe-tapping music, writer-director Ryan Coogler's first original blockbuster reveals the full scope of his singular imagination."

Previewing his upcoming project on the Last Podcast on the Left, Coogler revealed: "I've been excited about that for a long time, and I'm fired up to get back to it. Some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f***ing scary.

"We're gonna try to make something really great and really be something for the real X-Files fans, and maybe find some new ones."

He also disclosed that he had discussed the reimagined series with Anderson, although her participation alongside Duchovny remains unconfirmed at present.

"She's incredible. Fingers crossed there," Coogler added cryptically.

The X-Files does not yet have a release date.
