‘Best’ British rom com to leave Netflix soon – last chance to watch

From Notting Hill to Bridget Jones’ Diary, British romantic comedies have become a staple of modern British culture. But one classic in particular, which famously won BAFTA Awards' Best Film and Best Direction, is set to leave Netflix very soon.

It is fans’ last chance to watch Four Weddings and a Funeral, featuring stars like Hugh Grant and Rowan Atkinson, is set to leave Netflix on 4 March 2026. The rom com is set in and around London and follows Charles and his friends through a series of social events as they each navigate and encounter romance. The film is directed by Mike Newell and is the first of several films by screenwriter Richard Curtis to star Hugh Grant.

The rom com famously received Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay and, star of the film, Hugh Grant, went on to Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy and the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

The film scored a whopping 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.1 stars out of 10 on IMDb.

The IMDb synopsis reads: “Over the course of five social occasions, a committed bachelor must consider the notion that he may have discovered love.”

Other major stars include Andie MacDowell and James Flee.

One Rotten Tomatoes reviewers wrote: “Best Rom com of all time. There is nothing wrong with this film… best cast, best writing, so funny and so heart wrenching! Must have watched it 100000 times and loved every minute!”

Many fans praise screenwriter, Richard Curtis, and director, Mike Newell in particular.

One fan wrote: “Richard Curtis is my most favourite flick writer and this one could not be better. Director Mike Newell pairs with Curtis as they seem to understand life.

“Like a painting brushed by the best, a movie that has no misplaced words.

“Many significant scenes in this one are totally based on the dialogue; you care less about where the setting is. Mike Newell does a masterful job in setting up his camera to allow the actors to look great in the set pieces.”

Another review praised the sentiment the film left them with afterwards, writing, “Simply a charming movie.

“It gives you a slice of life about love and relationships and makes you realise that it is never too late to go for the person you love amidst all missed opportunities in the past.”
