Outlander heartthrob Sam Heughan has unveiled an exciting new project whilst championing a vital charitable cause.

The Scottish actor, famed for his portrayal of Highlander Jamie Fraser in the beloved Starz series, shared a charming selfie on Instagram this week.

He was sporting a hand-knitted tiger jumper, which Heughan disclosed was a gift from the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in backing of their Knit for Nature initiative.

Renowned knitwear designer Ruth Herring has reimagined her legendary patterns from her 1989 publication Knitting Wildlife for the campaign. The WWF is offering these patterns free of charge for anyone wishing to pick up their needles and highlight endangered species this festive season.

Heughan penned in the caption: "Thank you for the incredible work being done to raise awareness of the challenges tigers face in the wild and for inspiring more people to create something meaningful", reports the Scottish Daily Express.

He proceeded to urge supporters to participate, stating: "If you'd like a jumper like mine, all patterns by designer Ruth Herring @confessions_of_a_yarnaholic are free to download.

"Whether you're crafting for yourself or someone you love, you can knit for nature this winter."

The star concluded by suggesting he may participate in the initiative himself, noting: "Might get my knitting needles out this Xmas.."

Numerous admirers of the Outlander favourite have flooded Instagram expressing gratitude for his charitable message.

"I love all the support you give to wildlife and nature!!!" another fan expressed, punctuating their comment with a series of heart emojis.

Even celebrity Elizabeth Hurley chimed in, simply stating: "Adorable."

Fans of Heughan are eagerly awaiting his return to the small screen in the eighth and final season of Outlander, set to debut next March.

Alongside Caitriona Balfe, who plays Jamie's time-travelling wife Claire, he'll be bidding farewell to the role that has shaped his career for over ten years.

He recently concluded a successful run on stage, playing Macbeth in a highly praised rendition of the renowned William Shakespeare tragedy at The Other Place in Stratford-Upon-Avon.

In addition to honing his crochet skills, Heughan is also slated to star in the historical survival film Everest, alongside Ewan McGregor, Mark Strong and Juno Temple.

Outlander season 8 premieres Saturday, 7th March 2026 on MGM+ via Prime Video.
