Coronation Street fans were left devastated this week after soap star Helen Worth announced she’s leaving the ITV soap at the end of the year. The 73-year-old first joined the cobbles back in 1974 as Gail Rodwell, who later became known as Gail Platt.

As the Weatherfield icon gets ready to mark 50 years on the cobbles, the actress revealed she’d decided to bow out after a successful five decades. However, there may be good news for Helen Worth fans, as the actress could potentially be appearing on screens in a new light.

According to the latest odds from betideas.com, it looks as though the soap star may be swapping the cobbles for the ballroom, as she’s hotly tipped to star in this year’s Strictly Come Dancing.

Boasting odds of 8/1 to be part of the line-up, it wouldn't be the first time a Coronation Street star has appeared on the BBC show, as last year’s winner Ellie Leach had previously portrayed Faye Windass in the ITV soap.

Spokesperson Lee Astley said: “Helen Worth has graced the nation’s TV screens in the role of Gail Platt for half a century, but she has finally called time on her Coronation Street career.

“She may not be done with soap operas just yet though, with an appearance in another soap her likeliest next option should she remain in television.

Strictly Come Dancing is also among her most favoured options, with I’m A Celeb and Celebrity Big Brother also among shows which she is fancied to try her hand at.

“With nothing left to prove in showbiz, there is also a strong chance that Worth will hang up her scripts for good (4/6) or return to theatre work (5/1).”

Could Helen dabble into the world of reality TV after her impending exit?

Speaking about her exit, Helen confessed it felt like the perfect time to leave, as she marks the 50-year milestone next month.

The character won’t be making her exit just yet, however, as ITV confirmed Helen will bid farewell to Weatherfield in a major storyline for the Platt family.

Starting to film her exit plot next month, the emotional scenes will air at the end of the year.

Admitting she’s had the most wonderful job, Helen commented: “I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers who were very kind and understanding.

“I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in week out, and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors and a brilliant crew.

“The past 50 years have flown by and I don't think the fact that I am leaving has quite sunk in yet.”

Coronation Street continues on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV from 8pm.
