The Repair Shop expert Dominic Chinea was left a little overwhelmed when tasked with bringing one guest’s item back to its former glory.

During a repeated episode of the BBC show on Tuesday night, the metalwork expert was introduced to Jill Denny and her daughter Miranda.

Placing the item on the table, Dominic commented on how fragile it was before asking them to explain what it was. As the duo entered the workshop, Jill explained the object, which once belonged to her father, was an aerograph compressor.

Dominic commented: “I’ve got compressors outside but they all plug into the mains, no?” Jill explained the item was from the 1940s and is used by someone pumping it with their foot.

Chinea confirmed: "So it's like a foot pump? It pumps up this cylinder, which then is sort of like the reservoir for the air... to power the airbrush. So Why on earth did your dad have something like this, then?"

Learning more about her father, Jill told the BBC star he was a freelance commercial artist and worked with a company making cartoons in the 1940s before moving on to doing paintings in the 1970s.

However, highlighting the condition of the compressor, Dominic said: “So if, a big if, but if I can get it working again, what's the plan?"

The duo explained they want it to be working once again as Jill’s daughter admitted she wants to use it herself.

Once the pair had left the workshop, Dominic took the machine to his workbench for a closer look.

Admitting he’s a sucker for old tools, he confessed: “It looks quite daunting with hoses and levers and gauges everywhere, but this is basically a foot pump as we all know, pumps up your bike tyres.

"Air is drawn in, pushed into a chamber here and there's a plunger in there.”

After explaining how the device worked, the BBC star noted the issues with the piece, stating it had seen better days.

He added: “Rust has started to set in, so the best thing for me to do with the tank is to send it away to get professionally pressure-tested because I need to make sure there is no damage that is going to make that a dangerous thing."

Luckily, the machine was given the all clear and the expert was able to fix the compressor for Jill and her daughter.

During the reveal, they were blown away by how Dominic had managed to repair the machine.

Thrilled, she exclaimed: "Good God! That is bright and shiny! Is this the original colour? Oh, I could just see him using it! It takes me back right to my childhood, that noise!

The Repair Shop is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
