Coronation Street's Helen Worth has decided to step down from her role as Gail Platt after 50 years.
Coronation Street: Gail Platt revealed as mystery bidder
Coronation Street star Sally Dynevor, who plays Sally Metcalfe in the ITV soap, has shared her thoughts on her co-star stepping down. On Wednesday, it was announced that Helen Worth will be bowing out as Gail Platt after 50 years on the cobbles.
Sally was on the Loose Women panel when the news of Helen’s departure broke as Christine Lampard quickly addressed her exit. She said: “That’s unreal, she’s an absolute, proper, true Corrie legend!”
As the audience gasped in shock, Sally agreed with Christine before sharing that her co-star rang her on Tuesday to tell her. She commented: “I didn’t think this was going to break until Friday!
“We’re going to miss her so much because she’s amazing.” Paying tribute to Helen, Christine highlighted that many people don’t think of Coronation Street without her being in it.
Sally replied: “No absolutely not and of course Helen was there before I started. She was a guiding light to me Helen, she’s a wonderful actress and I love her so I’ll miss her.”
Coronation Street fans first saw the actress make her debut back in 1974 as the character of Gail Platt has been part of some of the soap's most dramatic storylines.
As she celebrates 50 years on the soap next month, the soap star has decided to leave the cobbles.
ITV have confirmed that Helen will start filming her exit story next month, with the emotional scenes airing at the end of the year.
Admitting that it hasn’t yet sunk in that she’s leaving, the 73-year-old praised her time on the soap.

She said: “This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world.
“I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers who were very kind and understanding.
“I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in and week out, and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors and a brilliant crew.
“The past 50 years have flown by and I don't think the fact that I am leaving has quite sunk in yet.”
Touching on her exit, executive Producer Iain Macleod had nothing but kind words to say about Helen as he reflected on some of her storylines over the past five decades.
He said: “Gail has given us countless hours of entertainment but it should also be said that Helen herself is a consummate professional and a thoroughly good egg.
“Everyone connected to the show will miss having her around the place just as much as the viewers will miss having her on their screens and we wish her all the very best for the future.”
Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV from 8pm.
