The latest episode of The Boys season 4 left fans reeling as they watched psychopathic Supe Homelander (Antony Starr) seek revenge on the scientists who raised him.

In episode 4 of the Amazon Prime show, the leader of Vought’s The Seven could be seen massacring those who played a part in his twisted upbringing.

It comes after Homelander decided to go back to where it all began in order to address his deep-seated issues as he attempts to be a father to his long-lost son Ryan (Cameron Crovetti).

Ryan is the illegitimate son of Homelander and Becca Butcher (Shantel VanSanten), who raised him with love and care to be a “normal” boy away from the prying eyes of the evil Supe who assaulted her.

However, inevitably Homelander finds out about his son and this season sees him take on parenting responsibilities for the first time, which doesn’t bode well for Ryan or his moral compass.

While the series leads us to believe that Becca raised Ryan in secret in order to protect them both from his father, who at first believed them to be dead, one fan had a different theory in mind.

After watching Homelander return to his roots, which saw him relive the heinous lab tests carried out on him as a young boy, the fan has suggested that the experiment never really stopped.

On social media, Reddit user @Spankapony123 wrote: “I’m rewatching season 2 and it’s a bit late, but the general consensus of Becca and Ryan’s living situation was to keep them safe and hidden.

“I have a theory that it was actually a Vought experiment that contrasted Homelander’s upbringing.

“Ryan being raised in a normal, happy home as an opposite to Homelander being raised in a lab and tortured.

“Just to see if the outcome would differ and on the plus side have a contingency against Homelander if it works.” (sic)

@LegoMyAlterEgo appeared to agree, adding: “We don't know all the details, but Ryan flying around showed that he was in some sort of prison/not a real town. He was very angry at him mom because of it.” (sic)

Is there a greater conspiracy at play here? We’ll just have to wait and see how the rest of the season turns out.

The Boys Season 4, episode 5 entitled Beware the Jabberwock, My Son will air Thursday, June 27 2024 on Amazon Prime Video.
