Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's staff coined a brutal two-word joke about the Duke of Sussex's relationship with the former actress, it has been claimed.

Royal staff were reportedly unhappy about Meghan's alleged bullying behaviour - that the Sussexes have vehemently denied - that they used the hashtag #freeHarry over the couple's relationship.

According to author Robert Lacey, Harry ended up having a row with Prince William about Meghan's treatment of their staff - something which forced a separation between the once-close brothers.

Pinpointing the row, which took place in 2018, the author also highlighted that many of the couple's staff wanted to jump ship and many joined an informal fraternity titled the 'Sussex Survivors' Club'. This is where the brutal hashtag was used.

In an extract from the new book, 'Battle of Brothers: William, Harry and the Inside Story of a Family in Tumult', obtained by The Times, Mr Lacey wrote: "The moment the prince heard the bullying allegations, he related to this friend, he got straight on the phone to talk to Harry — and when Harry flared up in furious defence of his wife, the elder brother persisted."

Stating that although Harry reportedly hung up the phone, William went to confront his brother in person. Mr Lacey added: "The showdown between the two siblings was fierce and bitter."

Speaking of how William allegedly felt about Meghan, Mr Lacey said that the father of three felt like his sister-in-law had an "agenda". Discussing the Princess of Wales, the author claimed that she had "had been wary of [Meghan] from the start".

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have strongly denied any allegation of bullying. A spokesperson for the couple previously said: "Let's just call this what it is — a calculated smear campaign based on misleading and harmful misinformation. We are disappointed to see this defamatory portrayal of the Duchess of Sussex given credibility by a media outlet.

"It's no coincidence that distorted several-year-old accusations aimed at undermining the duchess are being briefed to the British media shortly before she and the duke are due to speak openly and honestly about their experience of recent years."
