Outlander star Sam Heughan shared the "worst" part of shooting the drama and Caitriona Balfe couldn't help but agree.

Outlander: Season 7 part 2 teaser for STARZ drama

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Outlander.

Outlander’s Sam Heughan may have had his most “challenging” experience with filming the season one finale but it was another element of the show which he labelled the “worst”.

The Starz drama has been playing out for a decade, telling the beautiful yet often violent and tragic love story of Highlander Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) and Second World War nurse Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe).

And with so many years of shooting under their belts, of course, not every day is going to be easy on set for the cast and crew.

So when Heughan and Balfe took part in Vanity Fair’s game to find out how well they know one another, a number of answers popped up at one question in particular.

Addressing his co-star, Heughan asked: “What was my worst experience on the set of Outlander?”

To this, the Irish actress asked: “Was it being stuck on the boat with no toilet or food for a full day?”

Remembering the day she was referring to, Heughan replied: “Oh that’s pretty right. That was pretty bad actually, yeah. That was pretty horrific.”

Balfe then quizzed: “Was it the seven days shooting those terrible scenes in the brothel?”

“You’ve got quite a few, haven’t you? There were quite a few”, Heughan laughed.

Heughan then stated: “I’d say the most challenging was the end, the ep [episode] in season one.”

The Scotsman referred to the traumatising finale where Jamie Fraser is a prisoner being tortured by the cruel Captain Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies).

He then takes it to an entirely different level with Black Jack raping Jamie, leaving the Highlander emotionally scarred and viewers distraught.

But it wasn’t shooting these scenes that stuck out to Heughan when the “worst” part of filming Outlander comes to mind.

He continued: “But the worst, I think it’s just general, I’d say midges.”

“Oh the midges”, Balfe replied.

“The midges are just awful, aren’t they?”

Why did Harry and Meghan make a Netflix series about their life?

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have found themselves at the centre of public attention since they took a step back from senior royal duties in 2020.

In a trailer for the Netflix series about them, Prince Harry told viewers that “no one sees what’s happening behind closed doors” in a reference to how their lives may differ from what the public think about the couple. Meghan adds: “When the stakes are this high, doesn’t it make more sense to hear our story from us?”.

Reports suggested the Duke and Duchess of Sussex could receive up to $100 million for making the show, although this has been disputed and the true figure is unknown.

Balfe elaborated: “Have to explain to anyone who doesn’t know, these are the tiny little, almost invisible biting gnats. They get into your hair, under your costumes.”

“Under your wig”, Heughan then added, talking about the bugs which are known to thrive in the Scottish highlands where the show is predominantly filmed.

The cast and crew are once again suffering the midges though with production on Outlander season eight currently underway in Scotland.

As of yet, an official start date for the final series hasn’t been revealed but the show should be back sometime for these final episodes in mid-to-late 2025.

Outlander is available to watch on Starz and MGM+ via Amazon Prime Video Channels.
