BBC Breakfast's Sally Nugent shuts down Jon Kay after awkward slip-up

BBC Breakfast's Jon Kay majorly slipped up when he promoted the BBC teen 24 summit as his co-host Sally Nugent forced to step in to correct him.

BBC's Jon Kay says 2024 summit is going to Washington

Jon Kay almost over-promised the teens taking part in the BBC 2024 summit a trip of a lifetime when he revealed where the event was taking place in Wednesday's instalment of BBC Breakfast.

The 54-year-old host and his co-star Sally Nugent sat down with a group of students who had taken on the challenge of giving up their mobile phones for almost a week.

Teen Ruby, Loreann, and Charlie detailed the "tough" experience while telling the BBC Breakfast hosts about the benefits of going phone-free.

After the interview concluded, Jon explained that the students would be talking about the topic of phones at the upcoming BBC Teen 2024 summit.

But while dropping the details about the event he slipped up when it came to one major piece of information, forcing Sally to step in to correct him.

"These guys will be talking about this and all the other issues involved on BBC Five Live and BBC Bitesize a bit later this morning,” Jon explained.

“They're holding a Teen 24 Summit in Washing--, in Washington? No?” he continued, as he stumbled on his words before realising he had messed up.

Thankfully, Sally swiftly jumped in to correct him, pointing out that it’s actually “Warrington,” where the students will be heading to for the event.

“Sorry no Warrington,” Jon repeated, as he attempted to correct his blunder, before playfully brushing it off, exclaiming: “Almost!”

Making it clear the Teen 24 Summit was taking place in the north of England rather than Stateside, Sally quipped: "The budget didn’t stretch to Washington."

The BBC duo laughed off the slip-up as Jon went on to correctly explain what was going on at the educational event.

“Nicky Campbell will be live from nine till 11 am this morning with an audience of these guys and other 16 to 18-year-olds.

Sally then spoke with Morning Live’s Helen Skelton and Gethin Jones as they teased what was coming up in Wednesday’s show.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays on BBC and it is also available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
