GMB: Susanna and Ed grill Cooper on Lib Dems Brexit policy

It seems as though Good Morning Britain viewers were less than impressed with ITV’s Ed Balls on Monday morning. During the show, the presenter spoke to Lib Dem deputy leader Daisy Cooper with his colleague Susanna Reid.

During the interview, the topic quickly moved onto Brexit as Reid asked: “If viewers voted for a Lib Dem government, would you have a second referendum on Brexit, or would you aim to take us back into the EU if you got into the government?”

Cooper replied: “In the next parliament what we’d like to do is to renegotiate the existing trade deal that has wrapped up our small businesses. But, let’s be clear, right now...”

The MP was quickly interrupted by the GMB hosts as they pushed for either a yes or no answer from Cooper. She replied: “In the next parliament it’s not going to be on the table.”

As the Lib Dem touched on the crisis people are in due to the NHS and social care not working, Ed Balls was quick to cut the MP off once again. He said: “Daisy Cooper, we would so love you to be clear about this.”

Reid laughed at her co-star’s frankness as she swiped: “No one wants you to be more clear!”

Ball added: “A very simple question, as deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats, at some point in the future do you want Britain to rejoin the European Union?”

She told the two hosts that at some point in the future she hopes we might have that opportunity, although it’s not what is on the table in this general election.

He continued: “That definitely failed the clear test, it’s a really simple question.

“In the future, at some point, this parliament or the next, would you like Britain to join the European Union? Is that a yes or a no?”

As Cooper hit back that she had been clear about his question, the GMB star wasn’t having any of it as he said they were teetering on the brink of clarity.

It wasn’t long before viewers took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the interview, with many slamming Balls for his persistent questioning on the topic.

@ColinmUk said: “#GMB, come on Ed and Susanna, move on from this topic, you’re now becoming boring!”

@DOPreston wrote: “Ed Balls asking the same question to politicians over and over really is quite tedious.” @davmcdngh tweeted: “I think she’s been very clear.”

Ajouk commented: “I don't understand why @edballs thought Daisy Cooper was unclear about EU, it seemed crystal clear to me...significantly closer relationship with EU but not yet! Hope you'll be asking @Keir_Starmer that question as Labour is avoiding the subject like the plague.”

@debbyfield1 fumed: “Sorry, @gmb, I think Daisy Cooper is being very clear. I understood what she was saying. It's just that @edballs and Suzanna Reid were simply stringing out the "interview". I'm not a LibDem voter (far from), but this was desperate stuff from Balls and Reid.”

@kingfisher_22 added: “She did well even if she was pressed on the Brexit issue for some reason. She made her point clear.”

Good Morning Britain continues weekdays on ITV from 6am.
