Princess Anne once revealed what she would like to do if she wasn't a senior member of the Royal Family.

In an interview from 1983 with then-husband Mark Phillips, she was reminded by interviewer Michael Parkinson of her answer to the question 'if you could spend a day as a commoner, what job would you like to do?' She had said that she would like to drive a lorry.

Anne corrected Parkinson: "I think it was more precise than that. I was going to earn my living and as I've got an HGV licence I don't mind spending time on one's own driving.

"I think you could run your own life that way. You could put in a lot of hours for a period of time then leave yourself with a bit of time at the end of it. It wouldn't be such a bad way of doing it."

In a different interview that was also recently unearthed, Anne revealed the very strict rules that members of the Royal Family are expected to follow when working.

Speaking in the 1981 documentary Princess Anne: Her Working Life, the 74-year-old discussed the correct demeanour that is expected on visits.

She said: "[You must be] nice and bright and cheerful, [even if you may not necessarily] feel like it."

Anne, who is mum to Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall, also spoke more specifically about those she chooses to accompany her on royal outings. The royal, who is usually accompanied by her husband Sir Timothy Laurence, said: "On official engagements, what you require is a companion.

"It's no good to me if then, you know, you get somebody turning up in the morning looking like death and furious…"

She further explained: "And you know, ratty about life and non-communicative, and when they go out on a trip, they're standing in a corner looking glum and bored.

"I mean that's no help at all to anyone, least of all to the people at the other end, never mind to me."

Anne has often been described as the hardest-working royal. In 2023 she underwent an incredible 457 official public outings as part of the Royal Family.
