Soccer Aid made it's triumphant return to screens on Sunday (June 9), but one star faced a chorus of boos as he was subbed onto the pitch.

The charity football game was broadcast on ITV and saw England take on World XI, all in aid of UNICEF. The event, hosted by Dermot O'Leary and Alex Scott, brought together a host of celebrities to help raise vital funds for the charity.

Since its launch in 2006, Soccer Aid has impressively gathered over £106 million to support children in need across the globe, including those in places like Cambodia.

This year's glittering roster featured stars such as Paddy McGuinness, Erin Doherty, Danny Dyer, and Bobby Brazier in the England kit. Meanwhile, the international team showcased talents like Roman Kemp, Usain Bolt, Martin Compston, and Lee Mack.

However, it was the appearance of Love Island star professional boxer Tommy Fury that got fans talking. As the 25-year-old jogged onto the field to the iconic Rocky anthem "Gonna Fly Now" by Bill Conti, jeers rang out from the stands as he replaced comedian Maisie Adams.

Social media platform X - previously known as Twitter - quickly lit up with reactions from the audience, reports the Daily Star. One wrote: "Finally getting to see Tommy Fury attempt football again, he's so bad. Highlight of last year! #SoccerAid."

Another agreed: "SoccerAid here he comes, the worse soccer aid player of all time Tommy Fury." A third declared: "Hope Tommy Fury has improved his skills, last year he couldn't even kick the ball #socceraid."

Echoing these thoughts, someone else chipped in: "Tommy Fury has to be the worst footballer I've ever seen in my life [cringe emoji] #socceraid."

However, others threw their support behind Tommy as they showered him with praise. An adoring fan penned: "Tommy Fury gotta be studied because how's that man bulked so big again #Socceraid."

"Tommy Fury is one beautiful man isn't he... [heart-eyes emoji] #SoccerAid," acknowledged a second.

For the first time since 2018, England were crowned winners of Soccer Aid after beating World XI 6-3. At the end of the programme, England manager Robbie Williams revealed more than £15 million had been raised over the evening.

Funds raised from the event will go towards Unicef's efforts to shield children from disease and malnutrition, support mental health initiatives, and provide aid during crises in conflict-ridden nations.
