Michael's wife Clare, whom he married in 1987, issued a heartfelt statement after news of his death was announced. She began: "I don't know quite where to begin with this. It's devastating to have lost Michael, my wonderful, funny, kind and brilliant husband."

She continued: "We had an incredibly lucky life together. We loved each other very much and were so happy together. I am incredibly proud of our children, their resilience and support over the past days."

Clare admitted their family have been "hugely comforted" by the support they have received, recognising what her husband meant to people. Clare explained how Michael took the "wrong route" before collapsing, revealing how he "very nearly made it".

She added: "Michael was an adventurous man, it's part of what made him so special. We are so grateful to the extraordinary people on Symi who have worked tirelessly to help find him. Some of these people on the island, who hadn't even heard of Michael, worked from dawn till dusk unasked.

The TV star disappeared after setting off for a walk along a coastal route of the Greek island. After days of extensive searching, Michael's body was discovered under a fence surrounding a taverna situated on the Agia Marina beach, an area marked by hilly and rocky terrain leading into the sea.

Michael is best known for his various TV appearances, having starred in several BBC and Channel 4 documentaries. He is also a regular guest on BBC's The One Show and ITV's This Morning. He also hosts the podcast, Just One Thing.
