GMB: Kate and Rob report on Sunak's D-Day apology

Kate Garraway put a stop to normal proceedings on Good Morning Britain this morning as the show was interrupted for breaking news.

After returning from a break the ITV show cut to a special announcement, revealing that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had issued an apology. Kate said: "Good Morning Britain, it's eight o'clock and we have some breaking news.

"In the last few minutes, Rishi Sunak has apologised for leaving the D-Day commemorations early in order to record an interview with ITV."

It comes as the Conservative party leader left Normandy early yesterday (June 6). Many soldiers and veterans joined together to mark the 80th anniversary of the historic day, with King Charles also in attendance.

However, Mr Sunak faced backlash as he dipped out of the event early to continue his general election campaign. Kate explained that he has now released a statement, claiming that his actions were "a mistake".

She added: "In the interview he denied Keir Starmer's accusation that he lied about Labour plans to hype taxes by £2,000 during their televised leader debate earlier in the week."

Co-host Rob Rinder added to the report as he said that there would be another debate later this evening on BBC One.

Mr Sunak's statement read: "The 80th anniversary of D-Day has been a profound moment to honour the brave men and women who put their lives on the line to protect our values, our freedom and our democracy.

"This anniversary should be about those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. The last thing I want is for the commemorations to be overshadowed by politics.

"I care deeply about veterans and have been honoured to represent the UK at a number of events in Portsmouth and France over the past two days and to meet those who fought so bravely.

"After the conclusion of the British event in Normandy, I returned back to the UK. On reflection, it was a mistake not to stay in France longer - and I apologise."

ITV's Paul Brand confirmed on News at Ten last night that the PM returned from Normandy to do the interview. He said ITV was interviewing all the party leaders and had been working to secure a date with Mr Sunak for some time.

"Today was the slot they offered us," he said. "We don't know why."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV and ITVX from 6am
