Chris Packham makes 'innuendo' on Springwatch

Chris Packham left viewers saying the same thing as he made an innuendo just minutes into Springwatch. The BBC programme returned on Wednesday (June 5) as Chris and co-host Michaela Strachan presented live from ARNE Nature Reserve in Dorset.

Opening the episode, the TV duo discussed when the robins and Dartford warblers, shown in the previous episode, would leave their nest. Guessing which day they would go, Michaela revealed Chris predicted today, while she said Thursday.

Looking at the footage of the birds from the last 24 hours, Michaela confirmed that all three chicks left the nest, meaning Chris was the winner.

The 58-year-old quipped: "I'm delighted they fledged. I'm not so delighted that you won that bet," as she turned to her co-star. Not letting Chris get ahead of himself, Michaela reminded him that they still needed to look at the robins.

Watching the footage, Michaela and Chris discovered they were both wrong as the chicks left their nest today. Michaela declared: "So you got that one wrong. I got it very wrong because I said Saturday."

Chris responded: "Well within 12 hours!" His co-star hit back: "I know, I know! I'm giving you credit here. You got one right and one nearly right. I'm not going to give you your £1, I will give you the long spade from the shed."

Michaela handed the spade to Chris, who appeared very happy with the gardening tool. "The long spade. Look at that, I love a long spade. Look how long that shaft is. That's got to be 175cm of shaft."

When Michaela pointed out how "chuffed" Chris was, he claimed "it's a bloke thing" as they "love a spade". The naturalist continued: "I could dig something that you might slide into with this."

Viewers flocked to X, formerly Twitter, to share their thoughts on Chris's "innuendo", with one writing: "Chris Packham is enjoying his long shaft on @BBCSpringwatch."

Another penned: "Six minutes before the first innuendo, no guesses who it came from." A third chimed in: "@BBCSpringwatch Chris and his long shaft honestly it's not after 9pm yet," followed by a row of laughing emojis.

Someone else added: "I was about to comment on Michaela’s jumper when Chris pulls a Prue and yells 'look how long that shaft is' - there’s a lot to unpack and we’re only six minutes in."

Another said: "Packham live on BBC tonight holding a spade making innuendo about shaft." Meanwhile a sixth commented: "Chris is delighted with his long shaft."

Springwatch airs at 8pm on BBC Two.
