Richard Madeley discusses the plot of his new book

Good Morning Britain star Richard Madeley has revealed internet trolls inspired his new book, Father’s Day. Appearing on The One Show, BBC’s Roman Kemp asked where he got the idea from.

He said: “I was reading and listening to a court case about five or six years ago of an internet troll, a middle-aged guy, living with his parents, lived out of his box room. His thing, as the character in my book does, was to impersonate teenage girls, infiltrate teenage chat rooms for his own nefarious purposes.”

Richard explained that the person enjoyed getting the teenagers to treat themselves unkindly and lead them to dark places. The 68-year-old shared that listening to that story was what inspired him to write his novel.

The ITV star said: “I thought, internet trolls are the curse of the modern age, aren’t they? They didn’t exist until about 10 or 15 years ago. But they’ve completely infiltrated social media and I think they’re wicked.

“There are levels of wickedness but some of them are seriously bad people.” Richard revealed that he wrote the book for people who have suffered extreme trolling online, in order to get revenge on the perpetrators.

Explaining more on the plot, Richard shared the novel starts with a murder of a man, whose body has been discovered by two police officers.

The ITV host went on to reveal the victim was an internet troll who had been killed by the father of a teenage girl, whom he had been targeting online.

The father in the story vowed to get revenge after finding a secret laptop his daughter had hidden from everyone, which contained conversations with the troll.

Richard told the two hosts the story will make people question if they understood why the father committed the crime, and whether or not he should be caught by the police.
