BBC Breakfast's Sally Nugent slammed for 'worst interview ever' over Grant Shapps debate

BBC Breakfast star Sally Nugent invited Grant Shapps on the show this morning - and it caused a storm.

Grant Shapps says he's still confident of a tory election win

Sally Nugent was slammed for failing to "challenge" Defence Secretary Grant Shapps in a stormy interview on BBC Breakfast this morning over taxes. Asked whether he'd given up on a Conservative Victory, Grant vowed: "Not at all. We're still fighting for every single vote."

He made a call to action, urging voters to tick the Conservative box in the election next month to prevent a super majority for Labour. "Giving Keir Starmer a blank cheque or even a super-majority would be very bad for people's taxes and homes," he continued, warning: "Labour won't protect pensions from being taxed."

Shapps added: "They haven't even put everything in the manifesto... there are more taxes to come through increased spending." Quizzed on why taxation hadn't improved under the Conservative government, with a large increase in the numbers of over-65s paying income taxes, he blamed the "extraordinary" challenge of Covid, which no other government had had to struggle with.

He also referenced the war in Ukraine. However, over on Twitter, viewers were sceptical about his honesty and vented their frustrations on Sally Nugent for failing to "challenge" him over some of his claims. "@BBCBreakfast allowing Shapps to peddle his rhetoric without a challenge, come on Sally I thought you were better than that," exclaimed one.

"You’ve given him 5 minutes to slag off Labour & not asked one question about what he’s going to do," a second complained. "The interview with Grant Shapps is about the worse by far I've ever seen. Disgraceful #bbc," chimed in a third.

The criticism continued with a fourth blasting: "@BBCBreakfast that was embarrassing - Grant Shapps allowed to spout lie after lie about Labour, going barely unchallenged by Sally Nugent."

"Not seen an interview like this. He's literally being allowed to waffle on with no challenge at all. Dreadful 'journalist'," slammed a fifth.

There were also calls for her to stick to non-political interviews by some who were frustrated due to their opinion that she hadn't given Shapps a proper grilling.

Meanwhile, Shapps urged viewers to check his Twitter account for the lowdown on Labour taxation and where he'd got his projected figures.

He warned that Keir Starmer and his party would be "taxing people in every single direction and putting jobs at risk".

Although it seems he had a mostly frosty reception on Twitter this morning, the Conservative Party still has support from many

Asked whether he'd be giving up on election victory after the polls predicted a landslide Labour win, he insisted he had no intention of backing down.

"We are the underdogs," he mused, "but it's still possible for us to win."
