TV Critic discusses Giovanni Pernice's Strictly absence

BBC Breakfast addressed Giovanni Pernice's exit from Strictly Come Dancing. The 2024 Strictly line-up was recently announced, with the Italian dancer not featured in the round-up of professionals.

The 33-year-old has been the subject of controversy in recent weeks after three of his former partners, including Amanda Abbington, reportedly hired £700 an hour lawyers to pursue claims against him.

After the allegations came to light, Giovanni released a statement on social media where he vehemently denied the claims made against him and also said he was looking forward to clearing his name in the future.

Tuesday's instalment (June 11) of BBC Breakfast was presented by Jon Kay and Sally Nugent, who claimed the Strictly line-up was notable for two reasons.

Sally explained: "Professional dancer Amy Dowden is back following her treatment for breast cancer, but fellow pro Giovanni Pernice will not take part this year."

Jon and Sally spoke to TV critic Scott Bryan about the recent update. Scott shared his thoughts on Giovanni's exit, admitting he feels the professional could return to the BBC competition in the future.

Afterwards, Sally spoke of the "great" news that Amy Dowden was making a comeback. She quipped: "But the great news that we want to talk about this morning is of course, the return of Amy Dowden. It's great to see her back on the show."

Amy, 33, was diagnosed with breast cancer in April last year which meant she was forced to miss out on the 2023 series.

The professional dancer addressed her return on social media, writing: "I can't wait to be back on doing what I love most in the world, dancing. Feeling blessed and more excited than ever. Bring it on."

During the interview, Scott was left red-faced after Jon caught him trying to silence his phone. As Scott's mobile pinged twice, the TV critic could be seen attempting to put it on mute whilst still speaking live on air.

Jon said: "Scott I was so impressed with your very deft attempt at trying to silence your text messages coming in while you were speaking."

Scott let out a huge laugh as he admitted the message was likely one of his friends mentioning his appearance on BBC Breakfast.
