Despite being the fifth largest Canary Island, La Palma often gets overlooked by Brits who usually favour Lanzarote or Gran Canaria.

La Palma boasts fewer tourists and is known for its wine, cuisine and exotic fruits like bananas, mangos, papayas, and avocados. Nestled in the beautiful island sits a seaside village hidden within a secret cove.

Porís de Candelaria is hidden within a secluded cove where you will find a number of white houses, built into a 50-metre tall cave by its inhabitants over 100 years ago. The little hours are somewhat dream-like and are decorated with blue windows and doors.

Inside the cave, you’ll find a small bay perfect for swimming and admiring the impressive marine life hiding beneath its waters. However, swimming is only advised when the tide is low, as high tide can be dangerous for bathers

Interestingly, the cave itself forms a silhouette resembling the island of La Palma.

The name "Porís" originates from the rock to which fishermen’s boats were moored. This spot once served as a landing port for goods, despite its challenging accessibility

There are no beach bars or shops to eat at Porís de Candelaria and tourists are advised to bring a bag to collect tour rubbish as there are no bins.

With its historical charm, natural beauty and crystal clear waters Porís de Candelaria feels a world away from the tourist hustle and bustle on some of the other Canary Islands.

One of the best ways to get to Porís de Candelaria is by taking the boat from the nearby Tazacorte port.  This route offers the opportunity to spot whales and dolphins.  Several companies offer guided boat trips to see the amazing sealife.

The secret seaside town is also accessible by car but the road is narrow and winding, with a steep incline and is suitable only for experienced drivers.
