Do you dress differently when you go on holiday? While of course we opt for cooler clothing with warmer temperatures, certain items could land you in trouble in some countries.

Brits heading to the beaches of Portugal and Spain this summer should be cautious with their choice of beach accessories.

Authorities have introduced strict regulations against loud music speakers. Violations could result in fines of up to £3,400, aiming to preserve the tranquillity of the coastal areas.

The National Maritime Authority (AMN) has announced that loud music speakers are prohibited on the beaches.

As stated in the public beach notice, decree-law number 159/2012 forbids “the use of sound equipment and activities that generate noise which could cause discomfort on the beaches,” this is according to experts Wheeldon Brothers who have shared what you need to know.

They said: "This is not exclusive to Portugal, as Spain enforces similar strict rules. In Alicante, there is a crackdown on noise pollution, with tourists facing fines of £525 if they talk while listening to music on beaches.

“Additionally, new laws in Majorca prohibit the use of speakers, radios, and musical instruments that may cause a nuisance.

"To create a peaceful and enjoyable environment for all beachgoers, Portuguese authorities have set strict regulations against loud music speakers on their beaches.

“Violators can face fines ranging from €200 to €4,000. By reducing noise pollution, they are aiming to provide a tranquil setting where everyone can relax and enjoy the natural sounds of the sea and surroundings. This is something that we would like to see replicated on our beaches.

"The new bylaws prohibiting loud music and noise-generating activities on the beach are vital for preserving the tranquillity our visitors and residents cherish.

“These measures, which include fines of up to €3,000, are also important for maintaining our eligibility for prestigious blue flag certifications.

“Blue flags signify clean and safe beaches, and following these noise regulations helps us meet the high standards required for such recognition. It's not just about the fines; it's about preserving the quality and reputation of our beautiful coastal areas.

"The introduction of hefty fines for using loud music speakers on beaches in Portugal and Spain reflects a growing commitment to tackling noise pollution and protecting the natural beach experience.

"Tourists should be aware that popular beach destinations like Portugal and Spain are enforcing stringent rules against loud music to improve the quality of their coastal environment.

"Understanding and complying with these regulations will not only avoid hefty fines but also contribute to a more pleasant experience for everyone on the beach."
