Sicily is renowned for its beautiful sandy beaches, delicious wine and an abundance of ancient ruins, however given the island's worldwide reputation as a holiday hotspot, punters can't complain if there are too many tourists there for their liking.

If you're after a taste of Sicilian summer without having to battle for a table or a sun lounger, then why not head to the Aeolian Islands instead?

The islands, found just to the north of Sicily, has everything its much larger and more famous neighbour has - minus the hoards of holidaymakers.

In total, there are seven Aeolian Islands - Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Panarea, Stromboli, Filicudi and Alicudi - and each has their own character.

Salina is nestled in the northeastern side of the island and in 2019, Salina was awarded the title of most beautiful island in Italy by CNN.

Known as the Green Island Salina is surrounded by the crystal clear waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea

With volcanic cliffs plunging into the sea, sleepy villages amidst verdant mountains, colourful fishing boats on pebbly beaches Salina has a charming effect on visitors.

If you love food then you must visit this culinary hotspot as the island is famous for its capers which are often combined in recipes with anchovies and olives. Traditionally the island’s capers were preserved in salt gathered from a small salt lake.

Santa Marina Salina is the liveliest resort on the island with most of the clubs and nightlife, it is located on the slopes of Mount Fossa delle Felci.

While Lingua is a hamlet south of Santa Marina, it is a small fishing village with beaches made up of pebbles and a crystalline sea.

Also on the island you will find Malfa which has a sea of white houses, the village lies on a hilly terrace 90 meters above sea level and is the greenest place on the island. In the main square you will find shops and clubs as well as the church of Sant’Anna.

Located at about 200 meters above sea level you will find the small village of Leni. This village is mersed in the green of the Malvasia vineyards.

If you are looking to unwind by the sea then you should make your way to Pollara beach which  is one of the most beautiful of all the Aeolian Islands whilst  Rinella Beach, in the municipality of Leni, is one of the very few sandy beaches on the whole island and is recommended for snorkeling enthusiasts.
