Europe heatwave: Canary Islands weather warning - Tenerife and Gran Canaria to hit 37C

Weather warnings have been put in place for two of the Canary Islands as they brace for temperatures soaring upwards of 35C over the next two days.

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) issued yellow warnings for June 10 to 11, encompassing a total of six of the islands, however, two will be particularly badly hit.

Tenerife and Gran Canaria have been given extreme heat warnings, with both of them expecting temperatures to reach 35C, potentially 37C in some inland areas of southern Gran Canaria.

The warnings have already been extended once, as they were originally just for June 10, and further extensions have not been ruled out.

A significant portion of Tenerife is due to be impacted by the extreme temperatures, with the east, south, west, and northwest and southwest extremes all preparing for the heatwave.

It's a similar situation in Gran Canaria, with the east, west, and south of the island all expecting rising temperatures.

Both islands also have warnings for strong winds and waves, compounding the incoming heatwave and creating even more dangerous weather conditions.

Strong waves are expected around both of the islands from 3pm on June 10 until 11:59pm on June 11, but this warning could get extended to Friday.

In terms of high wind gusts, Tenerife can expert northeastern winds reaching up to 38mph, but it is unclear exactly which areas will be affected by this.

Gran Canaria is expected to see even stronger winds reaching 43mph, with their warning starting at 5pm on June 10 and continuing until 11:59pm on June 11, again with possible extensions.

Other affected islands will be: La Palma, Lanzarote, La Gomera, and El Hierro. The only island without a weather warning is Fuerteventura.
