BBC Breakfast Charlie Stayt missing after bankruptcy threat as co-star makes awkward slip

Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt usually host BBC Breakfast from Thursday to Saturday on BBC One.

BBC Breakfast: Charlie Stayt replaced by Roger Johnson

As Friday's instalment of BBC Breakfast aired on BBC One, viewers were left surprised after seeing a presenter shake-up on their television screens. Charlie Stayt was missing from the iconic red sofa and was replaced by stand-in host Roger Johnson, who was presenting alongside Naga Munchetty.

Things turned awkward in the studio after weather presenter Matt Taylor accidentally got mixed up between Roger and Charlie in an awkward blunder.

After presenting his weather bulletin, Matt said: "Naga, Charl- Roger!," and was left red-faced after correcting his mistake live on-air.

Roger quickly assured his colleague by adding: "Don't worry," as he awkwardly giggled before continuing on with the show at hand.

Despite the blunder, viewers seemed happy about the shake-up as they flocked to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their reactions to Roger replacing Charlie.

One social media expressed: " @BBCBreakfast Can we please have Roger everyday? He’s head and shoulders better than Jon or Charlie the hair.

"No sputteringly stupid questions like Jon or blank vacant imbecilic stare like Charlie. Roger and Ben Thompson should be the two anchors. Naga and Sally deserve better! #BBCBreakfast."

Another wrote: "Well that’s a nice surprise waking up to @RogerJ_01 on a Friday - good start to the weekend."

While a third gushed: "@RogerJ_01 oh Roger, breakfast tv!? You have turned my day upside down again ;)." (sic)

Charlie's absence comes after Charlie had been threatened with being bankrupt, after he failed to pay an outstanding tax bill. Charlie, 61, and his wife Anne, 58, have been asked to pay back the debt which has accumulated into the thousands.

Stayt Ltd, the source of their unpaid tax, is listed as being a TV programming and broadcasting company, and The Sun reports it is £6,409 in debt, with some of the unpaid sum stretching back to March 2023. Both Stayt and his wife are listed as directors of the firm.

Charlie is yet to publicly acknowledge the bankrupcty threat, but appeared during the D-Day celebrations on BBC Breakfast for Thursday's episode.

It's been a week of presenter shake ups as Sally Nugent was missing during their regular slots from Monday to Wednesday. Sally hosted the new BBC News at One instead and was replaced by Sarah Campbell in the studio.

Jon then reported live from Portsmouth and Normandy for D-Day celebrations, as did Charlie on Thursday, and Naga was in the studio alone on Thursday as the programme was cut short by an hour to make way for a special D-Day celebration show on BBC One.

BBC Breakfast airs at 6am on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
