Gardeners' World star Monty Don has shared a cryptic post on social media as fears mount over him exiting the BBC Two programme after 21 years as presenter on the show.

The 68-year-old gardener took to Instagram to share a post with his 1.3 million followers as he shared a picture of his beautiful garden with his pet pooch Ned in full view.

He simply captioned the picture: "Standing at the crossroads," with his beloved followers flocking to the comments section to share their thoughts. One person said: "We've all been there!," while another user asked: "That you cannot comprehend?"

Somebody else questioned: "The road (path) not taken?," while yet another referenced The Clash's hit song 'Should I Stay or Should I Go'. Monty's cryptic post comes after months of speculation that he would be exiting from Gardeners' World.

Monty continued to spark further concern after announcing overseas work back in April this year. He announced that his American followers can now order his latest book after it was released in the UK last year.

The gardening expert proudly held up his novel to the camera as he told fans: "Hi, I'm Monty Don and I'm delighted that my American followers can now buy this, my latest book it's called The Gardening Book.

"I believe it will prove an invaluable aid for you to make your dream garden. And, of course you can see my programmes on Amazon."

One wrote: "Been watching you on BritBox for years! Glad to have you on Amazon now! You have transformed my approach to my garden and landscape. I’m in beautiful East Tennessee."

A second commented: "So happy to have Monty Don in America!" Another typed: "An American FAN in Alabama! Looking forward to receiving my copy of your new book!"

A fourth wrote: "Texan here! I watch your show every Friday night on Gardner’s world! I love love how much knowledge you have and your beautiful gardens!"(sic) Monty's book is described as a "fresh approach to gardening" which will "guide you will discover just how joyful and rewarding gardening can be".

He has urged those keen to improve their garden to think of the space "like a meal", adding: "When you select a recipe, you're choosing it based on inclination, experience and circumstance. Making a garden, big or small, uses exactly the same process."

Monty joined the BBC show in 2003 after taking over from Alan Titchmarsh and hosted the series until 2008.

After taking a three year break, he returned in 2011 and has been hosting the show ever since.
