Bargain Hunt’s lackluster auction room on Tuesday left viewers at home questioning if “anyone is in the saleroom”, and nearly edged one contestant into the running for his own item.

University lecturer Piyush and homemaker Anshu formed the red team with antiques expert Kate Bliss guiding the married couple while Christina Trevanion hosted the BBC show.

While they speedily made their way through the bargain-hunting segment of the show, the couple seemed incredibly tense when it came time to auction their three items.

Piyush was particularly passionate about one purchase, a brass water bottle they nabbed for just £15.

When the auction stalled at £12, all four stars urged on the bidders pleading for “just £1 more”, but Piyush took matters into his own hands as he raised one hand in the air, the signal to make a bid.

While his first attempt seemed to be an honest, anxious mistake, Piyush quickly pretended to scratch his head when Kate looked towards him and raised his hand again once she looked away.

Christina quickly scolded the contestant, chuckling with shock saying: “No you can’t bid Piyush! Stop it!”

The university lecturer’s eyes went wide but still stayed completely focused on auctioneer Mark as the gavel went down, cementing the sale for just £12 and leaving the red team at a loss.

They had barely broken even on a pair of Edwardian silver mustard pots for £35 but lost another £5 on a cast iron table, leaving them at a total loss of £8.

However, the tables truly turned when the pair decided to auction the bonus item Kate had purchased them with their £165 leftover cash.

The expert bought a trio of Danish silver items including a matchbox cover, trinket dish, and brush pot for £60, expecting it to reach up to £80 at auction, and even the auctioneer, Mark Ashley, admitted in awe: “I can’t remember the last bit of Danish silver we had.”

Unfortunately, the bidders didn’t seem to agree with the experts as the trio sold for just £40, leaving the red team at a loss of £38.

Piyush and Anshu’s fate was sealed when a sudden turn of events saw the red team, married couple Kevin and Lindsey, grasp a £17 profit at the 11th hour.

Bargain Hunt is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
