Netflix drops first trailer for outrageous comedy with Sex Education and Derry Girls stars

A tantalising trailer for what could be Netflix's debauched comedy yet has just dropped, featuring some very familiar faces.

The Decameron official trailer

Netflix has released the first trailer for its “wine-soaked sex romp” The Decameron, hitting screens later this July.

From creator Kathleen Jordan, the historical comedy takes viewers back to the Middle Ages, 1348 to be precise, when the Black Death was ravaging Europe.

In Florence, a group of well-to-do nobles decide to hide away with their servants in a luxurious villa to wait out the plague.

However, as the weeks stretch into months, social order is thrown out the window, and the “cunning and outrageous” characters begin to scramble for power.

Here’s everything we know about Netflix’s raunchy and riveting new series, including some very familiar faces in the cast.

What is The Decameron about?

Showrunner Kathleen loosely based the series on a 14th-century collection of stories called The Decameron.

This early classic by Giovanni Boccaccio also details a group of men and women who shelter in a villa from the Black Death, but the Netflix series will take the concept to outrageous new levels.

The first trailer promises plenty of dark humour as the rich elites escape the plague but get up to all sorts of sordid mayhem within the confines of Villa Santa.

Who stars in The Decameron?

Netflix’s new comedy is packed with familiar faces as well as some relative newcomers.

Perhaps most familiar is Tanya Reynolds, who’s playing the noblewoman Licisca.

Tanya is best known for portraying Lily Iglehart in Netflix’s hit comedy-drama Sex Education and has also starred in Outlander, Death in Paradise and the 2020 film Emma.

Licisca strikes up a connection to Panfilo throughout the series, who’s portrayed by breakout actor Karan Gill. He’s best known for Bad Behaviour, Screw and I May Destroy You. She’s also seen in some steamy encounters with Dioneo, played by Amar Chadha-Pate who’s known for The Creator and The Wheel of Time.

Saoirse-Monica is also known for appearances in The Flash and Upgraded, while Zosia is best known for playing Shoshanna in the HBO drama Girls.

Viewers may also recognise Leila Farzad, who’ll be playing Stratilia. She’s best known for starring in I Hate Suzie, opposite Billie Piper, and has also appeared in Black Mirror and The Marvels.

Additional cast members include Lou Gala as Neifile, Douggie McMeekin as Tindaro and EastEnders star Jessica Plummer as Filomena.

The Decameron releases Thursday, July 25 on Netflix.
