Bridgerton fans may have sussed out a plot twist in the upcoming episodes.

Fans of the hit Netflix period drama have spotted a potential storyline for Benedict Bridgerton and Lady Tilley Arnold's affair, after the streaming giant dropped an exciting first look into the second half of Bridgerton's third season.

The first set of episodes, which landed on the service last month, saw Penelope Featherington (played by Nicola Coughlan) finally get her foot in the door when it came to her romantic feelings for Benedict's younger brother Colin Bridgerton (played by Luke Newton).

Viewers will continue to watch their love story unfold when the series returns on June 13. but the new trailer teases another spark with two other major characters.

Benedict (Luke Thompson) seems to be exploring a potential romance with Sophie Beckett, who also appears in the popular book series, after she made a brief appearance in the trailer when he was seen looking shocked at a mystery woman with her back to the camera, causing a huge stir amongst fans on social media.

Just seconds before the moment in the trailer, Benedict was seen in bed with his new and current partner Lady Tilley Arnold (played by Hannah New).

However, those who are familiar with the books will know that Sophie, the illegitimate daughter of the Earl of Penwood, is actually Benedict's wife, as well as the mother of their four children, in Bridgerton author Julia Quinn's novels, which the series is based on.

As Benedict is the second oldest brother in the Bridgerton family, he is expected to have his own dedicated season, and with a small feature in the new trailer, fans are increasingly convinced that it's only a matter of time before he meets Sophie and falls for her.

Die-hard Bridgerton fans rushed to Reddit to share their excitement, with one fan writing: "Is that Sophie?" as a second chimed in: "I literally rushed here to say this THIS SHOT plus the clock striking midnight in the trailer? ? ? ? I feel like we're getting hints for Benedict's story."

Another Bridgerton enthusiast raved: "I can't believe they're teasing with that image... the outrage/excitement that'll follow in the next two weeks is going to be unbearable."

With a fourth person asking: "I see you with the clock strike 12 Easter egg (an offer and a gentleman) Benedict is going to meet Sophie isn’t he."

Fans will be able to see what really happens when Bridgerton returns with part two of its third season on June 13.

All seasons of Bridgerton are available to stream on Netflix.
