Susanna Reid and Ed Balls have been heavily criticised for how they interviewed Shadow Defence Secretary John Healey on Monday's Good Morning Britain about Diane Abbott calling Labour Leader Sir Keir Starmer a liar.

Balls, who was holding up his phone to read the now-deleted tweet, began: "[She] last night tweeted, 'More lies from Starmer'.

"So she accused the leader of the Labour Party of being a liar on Twitter last night. She then deleted the tweet, but that is not the kind of behaviour you'd expect from a Labour candidate."

Replying, Healey shared: "Well you obviously follow Twitter a lot more closely than I do. I didn't see it and if she's removed it, I can't check it..."

Balls kept speaking over the politician to demand a "reaction" from him, but it was difficult to comprehend what either was trying to say.

Eventually, Healey said: "Look, the ball is in Diane's court, if she wants to stand and she says she does, the way is now clear and I am glad that confusion is now... The way is now clear for her to stand.

"She will, I expect, be endorsed as a Labour candidate I expect, alongside myself and candidates in 650 seats across the country."

Balls continued to probe, saying it "does feel like there is now bad blood" but Healy disagreed, calling Abbott a trailblazer.

Viewers slammed the interview on social media, with one fan writing: "Don't know why they have anyone on cause they never let anyone speak! And when they do if it's not the correct answer to them they Just talk over! Done with GMB now."

Marsha added: "Very poor interview - I wanted to know about current policies like social care - Absolute waste of an interview."

A third wrote: "What a dreadful interview. Repetitive questions and a stream of constant interruptions. A complete and utter waste of time. Be better."

A fourth shared: Absolutely shocking...was that really necessary @edballs? Dreadful interviewing and stirring the pot definitely..."

Meanwhile, Susan added: "John Healey should have been briefed about it and given a line to take as is normal PR practice on the other hand this really isn’t newsworthy any more and most people frankly are not interested."

Good Morning Britain airs on weekdays from 6am on ITV and ITVX.
