Good Morning Britain: Wes Streeting fires back in tense exchange

Good Morning Britain's Richard Madeley and Charlotte Hawkins had a tense interview with Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Wes Streeting on Wednesday's (May 29) show, as he chided them about running out of time. At the beginning of the interview they wanted to disuss the news that Diane Abbott has been " banned" as a Labour candidate in the forthcoming General Election, something he wasn't keen on mentioning.
While he tried to steer the presenters back to discussing policy, they were determined to enquire about his Labour Party colleague. He reluctantly spoke about his thoughts on her situation, and told Charlotte: "As I say I don't know the circumstances of the factors in the decision so, while I say this respectfully, a fruitless line of questioning.
"So I'm not going to tell you any more than I already know. I can talk to you till the cows come home about how we’re going to get NHS waiting lists down," he said.

When he finally made a point about his plans for the NHS he cut off the presenters, saying: "I'm so sorry we have run out of time." This led Richard to look at his watch and retort: “I’m so sorry. I didn’t realise you were running the clock on this!"

Confirming they had some more time, Wes said he was happy to carry on. "You do your job, and we’ll do ours, and our job is to decide what questions to ask you, and your responses are up to you," Richard chided him.

The interview left viewers divided, with some siding with the politician, while others took the side of the presenters. They took to X, formerly known as Twitter to share their feelings.

@Gm4nHere found the interview amusing, commenting: "This interview with Wes Streeting is entertaining to say the least. He’s very smug, but I laughed out loud at him winding up Richard & Charlotte."

@ginojaali disagreed opining: "That Wes Streeting guy comes across rude! You’re not the interviewer! Let the presenters do their job, answer the damn questions. I have serious doubts about this labour. If they continue like this, they will lose votes and end up in a hung parliament! #labour #gmb @GMB."
@reelofthe51st observed inconsistency from the interviewers: "So @CharlotteHawkns asks a question to Wes Streeting @GMB Richard Madeley says 'I was going to ask that' #gmb #goodmorningbritain."

@AnnLHowarth also took umbrage with the interviewers, chiming in: " Why is this interview so hostile? Streeting is at least trying to answer the questions, which is better than many political interviewees. #GMB."
@WhipperyW was also on the presenters side, writing: "Wes Streeting.......rude t***, full of his own self importantance #GMB."
Meanwhile, @Jacoaho concurred: "Car crash interview from Wes Streeting on #gmb his attitude is absolutely appalling #anyonebutlabour."

Good Morning Britain is on ITV weekdays at 6am.
