Remembering Birds Of A Feather - This Morning

Birds of a Feather star Lesley Joseph has opened up on the shows future after admitting she isn't sure how much longer she has in the business. The 78-year-old shot to fame playing the man eating Dorien Green in the hit BBC sitcom from 1989 to 1998.

She reprised the role when the show was revived by ITV from 2014 to 2020, alongside co-stars Linda Robson and Pauline Quirke, much to fan's delight. However it now appears she has hung up her leopardskin pumps and ruled out another return to the part.

"I don’t think [I'll return], no." At my age, I don’t know how much longer I have in this business”, she said. "I’m fit as a flea but there are a few other things I’d like to do before I retire."

The TV legend also admitted she has developed insecurities concerning her age despite still constntly working - most recently playing Mother Superior in the West End and UK tour of the stage adaptation of Sister Act, a role she will inhabit until June 8.

“The older I get, the more frightened I become of forgetting my lines and making a fool of myself in front of an audience. I think I’ll know when the time is right for me to retire, but it’s not today," she told The Mirror.

Lesley has inherited good genes. Her mother Rebecca lived to be a sprightly 103-year-old. The star has admitted work keeps her brain “active” and she also exercises regularly.

It clearly works because she can still fit into Dorien's famous skimpy costumes as she recently wore a tiny sequinned dress she sported in the show for a sketch with Rylan on his Radio 2 show.

Away from Dorien, she also donned sequins when she took part in Strictly Come Dancing in 2016 where she was partnered with Anton Du Beke.

She was the oldest contestant in the show that year and was the fourth celebrity eliminated.

At the height of its success, Birds Of A Feather pulled in audiences of up to 20 million per episode.

The final ever episode aired on ITV on Christmas Eve 2020 but Pauline Quirke declined to return for the special leaving Linda and Lesley to carry the show.

She is still in regular contact with co-star Linda, who is best known as a Loose Women panellist these days.

The pair are regularly photographed at red carpet events and even holiday together, and Linda frequently discusses their escapades on the ITV daytime show.
