Grey's Anatomy fans were left reeling by the season 20 finale and took to social media in disbelief.

Grey’s Anatomy has officially ended with the recent season 20 finale, however, fans were left disturbed by the major cliffhanger which saw a shocking mass exodus.
Since the show’s pilot in 2005, there has been a revolving door of characters with new faces appearing at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital being a regular occurrence.
Yet, viewers were left on edge after Meredith Grey (played by Ellen Pompeo) officially resigned and other doctors were fired after a scandal with her Alzheimer’s research.
After the former Chief of Surgery previously told her boss Catherine Avery (Debbie Allen) she would give up the controversial research, she secretly picked it up again.
This was unveiled during the finale and Meredith felt Catherine’s wrath as well as the others who lent a helping hand.

After the stand-off led to Meredith’s resignation, Amelia Sheperd (Caterina Scorsone) and Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) were fired in connection with her Alzheimer's research.
After Teddy Altman was also sacked for misappropriating funds, most of the medical staff threatened to quit in a major uprising against Catherine.
In a bold move, Meredith chose to publish her Alzheimer's research instead of handing it over to Catherine and keeping her job.
As she stated: “No matter what she thinks of us, she won’t stand in the way of scientific progress.”

After the tense scene fans quickly took to X, with their emotions including @estephaniiaa_ who slammed: “Catherine Avery Fox has been the enemy since DAY ONE.”
@DaniAlexMusic fumed: “How does one FIRE Meredith Grey from GREY SLOANE Hospital … doesn’t she OWN part of the hospital?!?!”
A stunned @ILoveBrittSnow posted: “What the heck?!? So Meredith quit, Owen, Teddy, and Amelia got fired??”
As @docandjohn4ever anticipated: “So are we ever going to see Meredith again? She quit Grey Sloan she has no reason to return to Seattle now. That ending kind of felt final for her.”
