Princess Diana's hairstylist has revealed what he was thinking the first time he cut Prince Harry's hair.

Richard Dalton styled Diana's hair for a decade and gave Prince Harry and Prince William their first haircuts.

In his new book, It's All About the Hair - My Decade with Diana, Dalton describes Harry's first trim and the pressure he felt with Diana keen to keep hold of a lock of her youngest son's hair.

He told People magazine: "The first time I cut Harry’s hair the windows were open and I was holding his lock of reddish hair, thinking, 'Oh, if this blows away, I’m in trouble'." He added also recalling: "'I’ll be put in the Tower of London'."

Luckily, Dalton managed to hold onto the hair and it was added to Diana's baby book, according to the hairdresser, who worked with The Princess Diana Museum curator Renae Plant on the book.

The hairstylist also reveals in the book that William would get excited when he entered the boys' nursery, because a haircut meant he could watch "extra" TV.

He writes that a young Prince William would run and grab a small white chair and place it on top of a square coffee table.

William and Harry would then take it in turns to sit in the chair and get their haircuts, watching TV as Dalton snipped away.

He writes: "They always knew they got 'extra' TV when we had haircuts so they thought it was great."

Dalton was responsible for cutting William and Harry's hair until they were 10 and seven respectively.

The hairdresser would also take his scissors to the barnet of King Charles, the then Prince of Wales.

Diana wanted Dalton to "fix" Charles's hair and "make it a little more modern", the hairstylist writes.

He described Charles as "reserved" due to his being brought up to behave in a certain way before staff, adding he was "very nice".

Dalton reveals Diana blossomed after the births of her children, with William born in 1982 and Harry in 1984.

In his book, the author writes that the late Princess of Wales was "at her very best as a mother".

He writes: "She absolutely loved and adored her boys, and she also craved affection. Her boys gave her that."

Dalton's book also explores how Diana was "in pieces" over Charles's affair with Queen Camilla, who was then Camilla Parker-Bowles.
