Royal fans have been left stunned this morning after King Charles posted a public birthday greeting to his youngest son Prince Harry.

The Duke of Sussex, who is turning 40 today, quit life as a working member of the Royal Family in 2020 and since went on to carry out a number of bombshell interviews about the monarchy, along with releasing his own memoir Spare.

This created rifts within the family, with many royal fans believing the prince “betrayed” the royals and now does not deserve such a public birthday greeting.

In the Royal Family’s post, a picture of Harry smiling in a grey suit jacket was shown along with a birthday message that read: “Wishing The Duke of Sussex a very happy 40th birthday today!”

However, on X, formerly known as Twitter, people have been quick to criticise the post.

One person wrote: “Don't even bother doing this, he's betrayed you all so many times! He doesn't deserve your well wishes.”

Another commented: “After all the hurt he’s caused his family they shouldn’t care at all about his birthday.”

However, despite plenty of people claiming he does not deserve the public well wishes, a number of X users were pleased to see a picture of the duke in celebration of his birthday, with the post hinting that the relationship between the two is in a better place than it has been for years.

One person wrote on X: “Happy Birthday Harry! So wonderful to see him acknowledged.”

Another said: “Happy Birthday Harry ! This is the best picture I’ve seen of him in a long time, he looks really happy & healthy.”

Royal fans were also confused why Harry was being sent well wishes on the Royal Family social media channels when he is no longer a working member of the Royal Family.

However, this is because the late Queen set a precedent that members of the family who are not working royals can receive a public birthday greeting on a milestone birthday, such as birthdays that end in an 0.

No other members of the Royal Family have yet wished the Duke a happy birthday.

He is set to celebrate the big day in California with his wife Meghan Markle, 43, and their two children Archie, 5, and Lilibet, 3.
