Queen Elizabeth II died two years ago and thousands have called for the anniversary on September 8 to be marked by a new bank holiday.

A petition launched after her death calling for an annual ‘Queen Elizabeth’ bank holiday has received more than 159,000 signatures.

The campaign on change.org proposes that the anniversary of Britain’s longest-serving monarch should become an annual celebration of Her Majesty’s life.

John Harris started the petition, stating: “Queen Elizabeth II is our longest reigning Monarch, and arguably the nation’s, and the world’s most popular ever Monarch.

“In the words of President Macron, ‘to you, she was your Queen, to us, she was THE Queen…The most constant symbol of Great Britain’.”

“She was indeed an inspirational woman. Britain has fewer bank holidays than most European countries; France has 11 compared with our 8, Spain has 14.

“I believe we need a new public bank holiday to mark our greatest Sovereign’s lifetime; a Queen Elizabeth Day. A day for our Nation to come together and celebrate both the life of the Queen, and our gratitude for the institution of our Royal Family.”

Commenting on the petition Tracy Easton said: “After serving for 70 years, this outstanding service needs to be marked.”

While Frank McCoid wrote: "We shouldn’t forget what the Queen has done for the country and the world."

And George Howard said: “A day to remember the greatest Queen, the greatest woman and probably the greatest Briton who ever lived.”

Despite strong support for the campaign, the Government quashed hopes of an annual bank holiday in September 2022.

A spokesperson for No10 said: “The government wants to consider the best way to memorialise the Queen. That's something we will consider not just on our own but obviously in conjunction with the Royal Family and others.”
