The summer months are a time for the Royal Family to rest and regroup, taking a break from their engagements and the spotlight.

Things are already on the quiet side for the royals because of the forthcoming General Election. Both King Charles and Prince William have cleared their diaries as not to distract from political campaigns.

The vote will take place on July 4, and royal engagements will be muted between now and then, with some exceptions, like Trooping the Colour, which kicks off on June 15 at 10:20am.

Pauline Maclaran, author of Royal Fever: The British Monarchy in Consumer Culture and Professor of Marketing & Consumer Research at Royal Holloway University of London, talked about what to expect as we head into summer.

She believes the summer will offer the royals “respite,” particularly Princess Kate, because her time will be accounted for and people will stop predicting when she will make her return to public-facing duties.

Charles typically heads to Scotland for the month of August, but he recently opened Balmoral Castle up to the public, so he may “spend less time there,” said Prof Maclaran.

“It is normally accepted by the public that the summer is a quiet time for royal appearances, especially August as Queen Elizabeth would traditionally go there (Scotland) for the month.”

Even so, the royal historian expects the royals will continue with their summer plans, which is, to pull back on plans. Princess Kate is currently on a leave of absence, as she recovers from her abdominal surgery and is undergoing cancer treatment. There’s been a lot of speculation about her return with Prof Maclaran suggesting the summer break will be “beneficial for Kate,” because her absence won’t be questioned on social media.

Kate was recently spotted out and about running errands, which was widely reported on. It’s believed the update was released to quiet down the social media storm over when she may make her return to public-facing duties, suggests the co-hosts of Royally Obsessed, Rachel Bowie and Roberta Fiorito.

There is speculation the Princess of Wales may make a surprise appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony for the King’s Birthday Parade, but, it’s yet to be confirmed, being a surprise and all.

Charles and Kate have always had a close relationship, and even more so now, going through serious health issues together, it’s being said, and we have a feeling it would mean the world to the king if she in fact able to join him for the birthday celebrations.
