King Charles and Queen Camilla hosted a lavish state banquet at Buckingham Palace for the Emperor and Empress of Japan as they completed day one of their visit to the UK.

Tonight's glittering event saw the Japanese visitors mingle with the British royalty, including the King and Queen themselves, the Prince of Wales, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.

The Princess of Wales, who returned briefly to the spotlight at Trooping the Colour earlier this month despite her ongoing cancer treatment, did not take part in the visit.

Neither did the Princess Royal, who is recovering in hospital after sustaining a minor head injury following an accident involving a horse at the weekend.

Tonight's banquet featured a three-course menu which includes langoustines (Norway lobsters), turbot and peach sorbet, according to Buckingham Palace.

The menu in full

According to the officially released menu, the attendees were treated to three dishes, consisting of a starter, a main and a dessert and were entertained by the Royal College of Music's Senior Quartet, Seion Quartet".

The starter consisted of poached Scottish langoustines on a nest of cucumber with basil mousse and chilled tomato consommé.

The main course was a baked fillet of Cornish turbot with herb butter wrapped in lettuce, Sorrel cream sauce and a selection of summer vegetables. It was accompanied by creamed potato and spinach croquette and a salad of green beans and quail eggs.

For dessert, guests enjoyed an ice cream bomb with a peach sorbet insert on a bed of compressed peaches.

Meanwhile, the carefully selected winelist consisted of Coates and Seely Brut Reserve NV, Kumeu River, Hunting Hill Chardonnay 2016, Château Angludet, Margaux 2014 and Laurent Perrier Cuvée Rose NV.

Tonight's lavish state banquet also featured eye-catching floral displays of roses from the gardens of Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, while the banquet tables featured Palmatum Seiryu Acer trees, known as the Japanese Maple.

The Acers will be retained and repurposed for future displays at Buckingham Palace.

Earlier today Britain rolled out the red carpet for Emperor Narahito and his wife, Empress Masako, as they were formally welcomed into the country with the traditional pomp and pageantry on Horse Guards Parade, before being treated to a carriage ride by the King and Queen.

Following a private lunch at Buckingham Palace, the Japanese visitors were then given a tour of a Royal Collection exhibition in the Picture Gallery and laid a wreath at the Grave of the Unknown Warrior in Westminster Abbey.

The key event marks Charles's first incoming state visit since his cancer diagnosis earlier this year.
