Prince Harry should make the first move to end the rift with his estranged Prince William, a royal expert has said. Richard Fitzwilliams claimed "a huge question mark" surrounds what might happen between the siblings in the future.

He told the Sun Prince Harry and Meghan Markle can't attack the Royal Family at a time when both King Charles and Princess Kate are undergoing treatment for cancer.

The expert said any rift is made even more undesirable when those caught up in it are ill, adding it would be "a step in the right direction" for the Sussexes to "say something nice" about the Windsors.

Mr Fitzwilliams told the same publication it is up to Harry to make the first move towards reconciliation as he had allegedly done the most harm to the royals.

He backed up his claim by pointing to "damage" caused by interviews given during the Sussexes' tour of South Africa and to Oprah Winfrey as well as claims made in the Netflix docu-series, Harry & Meghan, and in Harry's memoir, Spare.

Among the allegations levelled against members of the Royal Family, Harry said William physically attacked him in a row over Meghan, leading the younger brother to fall onto a dog's bowl.

Harry and Meghan told Oprah a member of the Royal Family had speculated about the skin colour of their then unborn first child, Prince Archie Harrison.

The Duke of Sussex has demanded an apology for the way he says Meghan was treated by the Royal Family before the couple exited the Firm and moved to North America.

Mr Fitzwilliams said if the Sussexes decided to say something nice about the Royal Family in public, then that would be a step in the right direction.

He added: "But in reality what you need is something private, something we don't know about."

An unnamed source cited by the Sun said the view Harry should make the first move was "somewhat one-sided" and there is a need to recognise relationships are "reciprocal".

Royal commentator Tom Quinn suggested Harry and William may be encouraged to reconcile due to efforts from King Charles to get the Duke to find a residence in Britain.

Mr Quinn told the Mirror Charles has been putting pressure on Harry to secure a UK home so he can enjoy a closer relationship with the Sussexes' children, Archie and Princess Lilibet.

However, BBC former royal correspondent Jennie Bond told OK! magazine in May that William and Harry's relationship is "terminally damaged".

She added: "Kate and William are involved in a frightening fight and I don’t think they have the will or the strength to confront someone, even a brother, who picked a fight over issues that seem pathetic by comparison."

Ms Bond continued: "William is doing everything he possibly can to protect his wife and I very much doubt that they want to deal with 'the Harry problem' right now, if ever."
