Gavin and Stacey will be returning for a Christmas Day episode, however it has been confirmed that one star of the show will not be making a comeback.

The BBC sitcom ran for three seasons and a Christmas episode between 2007 and 2010 on the BBC, before returning in 2019 for a Christmas special which ended on a cliffhanger when Nessa (Ruth) proposed to Smithy (James).

James Corden announced the exciting news earlier this year with a photo on Instagram.

Showing a black and white image of himself with co-star Ruth Jones, James wrote: "Some news… It’s official!!! We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey. See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James."

Despite fans being delighted with the news, there is one star who has ruled out returning to the BBC show. Lewis Merchant, who previously played Baby Neil, will not be returning.

Speaking to The Sun, he admitted that he has no plans to return to the show and just finished his GCSE exams. He explained: "I was in an acting company but I don’t do that anymore.

"I just lost interest mainly, because I found I loved football and I preferred to do that when I was a bit younger, that was the main reason I stopped."

Other actors who played Baby Neil include Ewan Kennedy and Oscar Hartland. The character of Baby Neil was introduced in season two when Nessa gave birth to Smithy's son.

Since the news was confirmed, Ruth Jones has been bombarded by fans for spoilers on the upcoming Christmas special episode. The star has made up numerous "spoilers" and even quipped to fans that there could be a "helicopter crash".

Speaking to fellow co-star Rob Brydon on his podcast, Brydon &, she said: "I was very sad that it got leaked. James [Corden] and I had been writing since September, which is always the case with us.

"We write it and then we go to the BBC and say do you want it because if we didn’t feel it was going to be good enough, no one else would know and nobody would be any the wiser.

"So, when we felt it was in good enough shape, that’s when we contacted the BBC. There was all this stuff about Netflix and a bidding war… absolute rubbish, you just go, where did this come from?"

Ruth also continued how she'd meet fans after performing her stint in Sister Act in the West End backstage. After signing autographs, she then said that numerous Gavin and Stacey fans have bombarded her with questions about the upcoming episode.
