Thomas Forrester spots brooch on Bargain Hunt with colourful history

Bargain Hunt's Thomas Forrester has revealed the items that are likely to make money at auctions at the moment and it is not classic antiques which are seemingly "out of fashion". The BBC star says people should be looking to more recent times if they want to try their hand at turning a profit buying and selling items.

He revealed that a vintage item in your home is sure to make you some money due to the interest in the market.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk he said: "The market has changed so much as to what is fashionable. Vintage cameras can do well. We've all got a camera on our phone, and probably 99.9% of people have a smartphone, but an old vintage Pentax camera on which you put a 35mm film and and you wind it around on the on the barrel people are loving right now.

"So anything like that. The lenses that would sit onto the camera as well. And of course, the great surge in vinyl records. That has changed the way the music industry is now looking at music and everything associated with the vinyl record. You've got the vinyl record, you've got the artwork...

"Then, of course, if you're going to collect vinyl, you're going to want to play it so that's another thing to look for your actual deck, which you put your vinyl record ond and then that's associated with the speakers, and amplifiers and all of that," he advised.

"Let's not think about the old sort of antiques of furniture or ceramics, which actually are not so fashionable right now, but they will become fashionable [again]. [At the moment] think about all those domestic objects. I'm about to turn 50 next year. For my generation looking back at that analog world, where it's so real and it's not so digitalised -that's what you should look out for when you're going out [buying items]," he ruminated.

Having been in the business for decades Thomas feels this is a great time to be a collector as many pop culture items are now coming on the market, such as a pair of Elton John's boots which popped up on Bargain Hunt, as people who were involved in huge projects now downsize.

"As a nation the British have a love collecting. We love antiques. We just love the idea of going to an auction, picking up a bargain, or going to a car boot sale, or going to an antique fair. Within the realms of the British Isles and Ireland, there are probably about between 10 to 15 to maybe 20 auctions a day.

So...stuff is moved round. We see this huge circulation of items coming around within our business, and stuff [collectibles] does come out the woodwork. Our business is built on four Ds - death, divorce, debt, and the really big deal is downsizing. So we've got this baby boomer generation who are now downsizing from their big houses and all these goods are being dispersed.

These people they could have been the sound man in Abbey Road. They could have been on the Star Wars film set. And now all these goods are slowly coming out and it's just exciting. People might say, Oh, the best times have ended with the antique business. I disagree. I think interest is still piqued," he pondered.

Thomas was speaking in advance of raising his gavel for Oxfordshire’s OxTrail, which will feature a stunning selection of life-sized ox sculptures and mini oxen, all available for bidding to raise funds of Sobell House Hospice.

Throughout the summer more than 130 oxen have decorated the county as part of the charity’s Wild in Art trail which has invited people from across the country to discover hidden ox designs in Oxford and surrounding areas. With the art trail finishing at the end of August 43 of the sculptures are going to auction.

Despite a long career in the antiques business Thomas has never overseen an auction like this and admits he can't wait to "have a crack at it. "I had an email from Sobell House saying, 'Would you like to have a conversation about this? Would you be prepared to be our auctioneer on the evening?' And I've never done one of these. I have seen other auctioneers do them, and thought I'd probably quite like to have a crack at that.

"And of course, the money goes to the great cause of the hospice Sobell House, which offers palliative care and end of life care. How we cope with our ill and how we cope with people in their last, final moments with dignity and respect is so important as that sort of encompasses the whole of life, so to speak. I take my hat off to those people who work so tirelessly," he said.

The OxTrail auction in aid of Sobbell House will be held both online and in person at the Saïd Business School, Oxford on Friday, 13 September at 7:30pm. The sale Those looking to attend can check out the online auction via the digital catalogue and register their interest today.
