Man Utd: Bruno Fernandes compares himself to Paul Scholes
On this day 15 years ago, Paul Scholes fired Manchester United through to the Champions League final at the expense of Barcelona. The Red Devils icon unleashed a stunning strike that sailed into the top corner and beyond the reach of Victor Valdes. However, when quizzed on his heroics that evening, the 48-year-old is far from enthusiastic.
Manchester United hosted Barcelona at Old Trafford all the way back in 2008 with the tie in the balance following a goalless draw at the Nou Camp.
The Red Devils had spurned a glorious chance to go ahead in Catalonia, with Cristiano Ronaldo missing an early penalty.
But United then got the job done at home, with Scholes the matchwinner. His powerful strike sailed past Valdes and Sir Alex Ferguson’s side then dug deep to keep the visitors at bay.
Earlier in the season, United hosted Barcelona again. And Scholes, speaking to club media, revealed he’d actually scuffed his shot.
"It was a miskick but I wouldn’t say it was my shin,” he said.
“It was the outside of my foot and the best miskick I’ve ever done anyway."
