After a long 48 hours, Euro 2024 action returns this weekend for the round of 16. The knockout stages will begin with Switzerland facing Italy this evening, before host nation Germany take on Denmark.

England then have the chance to silence their critics on Sunday when they take on Slovakia on Sunday. The Three Lions underwhelmed during the group stages with three sub-par displays but they are yet to taste defeat and have managed to secure a favourable route to the final by topping Group C.

Gareth Southgate is expected to shake up his midfield, once more, in the hope of striking gold with his team selection. However, an additional change may be required due to a fresh injury concern.

Express Sport brings you all the latest news from Euro 2024 below...

Thanks and goodnight

That's that for today's Euro 2024 action.

Tomorrow we've got England vs Slovakia at 5pm UK time.

And Spain vs Georgia at 8pm.

Join us tomorrow for all the build-up for those games and more reaction to today's drama!

ITV pundits discuss Germany VAR drama

There was VAR drama in Germany's win over Denmark.

And the ITV panel aren't particularly happy about the decision-making that saw the hosts given a penalty...

FT: Germany 2-0 Denmark

And that's that.

Hosts Germany are into the Euro 2024 quarter-finals, joining Switzerland.

The Germans will face the winner of Spain vs Georgia, with the Swiss lined up to take on England or Slovakia.

It's the Three Lions in action at 5pm tomorrow with Spain the 8pm match.

GOAL: Germany 2-0 Denmark

Is that the game? Jamal Musiala finds the bottom corner to double the Germans' lead with 20 minutes to go.

Borussia Dortmund's Westfalenstadion is absolutely bouncing after that one.

Germany have one foot in the quarter-finals.

GOAL: Germany 1-0 Denmark

We now have the breakthrough after another VAR check.

The ball hits Andersen's hand inside the box from a David Raum cross and he's punished.

A nightmare few minutes for the Crystal Palace defender.

Kai Havertz steps up and scores his second goal of this tournament, finding the bottom corner expertly. The Euro 2024 hosts lead 1-0.

Denmark goal ruled out

Germany had a Nico Schlotterbeck goal rightly ruled out early on - and now Denmark have had one chalked off too.

Joachim Andersen strikes low into the far bottom corner in the 48th minute.

But after a VAR check, it's given as offside. There's a huge roar from the Germans after that.

HT: Germany 0-0 Denmark

Goalless at the break but it's an exciting match.

Rasmus Hojlund has just gone close while Kasper Schmeichel has saved from Kai Havertz, Nico Schlotterbeck and Joshua Kimmich.

Incredible lightning picture

A quite incredible shot of the lightning earlier.

Germany vs Denmark back underway

We're back underway after a stoppage of almost 25 minutes in Dortmund.

The match was paused in the 35th minute so we'll have another 10 to play before the half-time break.

We were expecting tonight's round of 16 clash, if it is decided inside 90 minutes, to finish just before 10pm UK time but we will now be ending closer to 10.30pm.

Extra time and penalties would of course take it well beyond that time.

Germany vs Denmark SUSPENDED

Dramatic scenes in Dortmund.

Referee Michael Oliver has suspended the match due to thunder and lightning in the surrounding area.

The rain is hammering down at the Westfalenstadion and is then followed by hailstones.

The players have been taken off the pitch and into the dressing rooms.

We're at risk of the pitch not even being playable by the time this match restarts, so heavy is the rain...

Ex-England international Lineker reckons this is the worst Italy team he's ever seen...

Italy are OUT of Euro 2024

Defending European champions Italy, who beat England in the final of the last tournament three years ago, are OUT.

They lose 2-0 to Switzerland who pull off another brilliant result at this stage of the Euros.

They dumped France out on penalties in the last tournament and have achieved another historic result here.

Here's that second Switzerland goal.

A mere 27 seconds into the second half after Nicolo Fagioli gave possession away from kick-off.

LATEST: Switzerland 2-0 Italy

An update from Berlin.

It's 2-0 to Switzerland just 46 minutes in. The Swiss led before the break through Remo Freuler's well-worked goal.

And Ruben Vargas has just doubled the advantage less than a minute into the second half with a beautiful finish.

Italy have been very poor so far and need a HUGE improvement to recover.

Belgium apologise for Mbappe video

Belgium's FA have issued an apology after sharing a video to their official social media channels of Amadou Onana chanting about tackling Kylian Mbappe's shin.

The two nations go head-to-head in the Euro 2024 round of 16 on Monday night.

In a video, Onana chanted alongside comedian Pablo Andres: "Who is going to make tackle Mbappe in the shin? Onana, Amadou Onana!"

Belgium's press officer Stefan Van Loock has now said: "A video was posted yesterday (Friday) on social networks in which Amadou Onana talks about tackling Mbappe on the shin.

"The Federation has been working with Pablo Andres for several years now.

"The one published on our networks was also humorous. We apologise if anyone may have been offended."

Ex-Liverpool says Slovakia are facing England 'at the right moment'

Former Slovakia defender Martin Skrtel believes that his nation are playing England ‘at the right time’.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the ex-Liverpool star revealed that he has not been impressed by the Three Lions but is aware that Gareth Southgate’s side have the potential to improve markedly.

He explained: “I watched two games against Denmark and Slovenia and I've got to say I was surprised and also a little bit disappointed. I expected a little bit more from England's side and I think they could do much, much better.

“We know they're quality and the tournament is just starting now because it's about the one game at the moment. It's going to be very difficult for us but if I can say this is the right moment for us to play against England, because our team are performing really well and full of confidence. If we can (ever) beat England, it would be this time.”

Nagelsmann responds to calls to drop Havertz

Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann has responded to calls for him to drop Kai Havertz for the host nation’s clash with Denmark this afternoon.

Germany supporters have demanded that Niclas Fullkrug should start over the Arsenal forward, though Nagelsmann believes that Havertz deserves more credit for his recent displays.

He explained: “If you look at it from the outside, a demand for Fulle is understandable, even though Kai comes off much worse in the public assessment. He has a clear job in many games, which means that he doesn’t have many ball actions because he should create space for others. He did that exceptionally well.

“In the internal assessment, Kai is ranked much higher than in the public. For the striker, it’s not always just about scoring a goal. If you’re substituted and the opponent is already tired, you might have a little more space. Fulle has a good rating, but Kai is an important player for us. We’ll see who starts [against Denmark].”

Belllingham told not to do anything 'stupid' to cost England

Wayne Rooney has revealed that he is concerned by Jude Bellingham’s body language and hopes that the England midfielder does not do anything ‘stupid’ to cost his side.

He told The Times: “Three or four times in the first half he [Bellingham] could not hide his frustration (against Slovenia). He was turning round to look at others and throwing his arms up. Body language like that sends a message to the fans, to his team-mates, to the manager.

“I just hope the frustration doesn’t boil over to the point where he gets a red card or does something stupid and gets himself injured. Against Slovenia, it looked as if he was getting close.

“There was the time he ran through but the pass was overhit and he slid on his knees off the side, almost smashing into the advertising boards. Frustration. But something like that is so silly — you can injure yourself.”

England announce training squad

England have announced that their full 26-man squad is in training this morning. Doubts over the fitness of Kieran Trippier and Luke Shaw have been raised over the past few days, though Gareth Southgate can take confidence from the pair both being present in his sesssions this morning.

Virgil van Dijk hits back at criticism

It is not just England who have received plenty of backlash at Euro 2024, the Netherlands have also been subjected to plenty of criticism.

Captain Virgil van Dijk, in particular, has come under fire from several ex-Dutch professionals.

The Liverpool has now responded to that criticism, admitting that he was not at his very best when the Netherlands were beaten 3-2 by Austria in their final group game.

He said: “The last match was definitely not my best, but personally that has not happened often this season. It is important to me that it stops now.

"That is the responsibility I take now. That responsibility is very great, especially at Oranje. And the criticism affects me."

Rooney claims Southgate 'killed' two stars in the group stages

Wayne Rooney believes that Gareth Southgate ‘killed’ two England stars during the Three Lions’ group stage at Euro 2024.

The ex-Manchester United star has been left unimpressed by how Southgate has tinkered with his midfield ranks, with Kobbie Mainoo the latest star expected to be partnered with Declan Rice.

Speaking to The Times, Rooney believes that the manner in which Conor Gallagher and Trent Alexander-Arnold were trialled alongside Declan Rice has ‘killed’ the duo.

He said: “‘None of what happened in the group stage surprised me. I would never have played Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield and expected that, when the experiment didn’t work, Gareth would try Conor Gallagher.

”Gareth killed both a bit by discarding them, but in each case it was the right call and when Mainoo came in you saw him making forward runs and showing composure on the ball.”

Italy forced into major defensive changes

Italy have been dealt a significant double injury blow ahead of their clash with Switzerland.

Manager Luciano Spalletti revealed that Inter Milan duo Alessandro Bastoni and Federico Dimarco are both unlikely to feature in the round of 16.

Speaking on Friday, the ex-Napoli boss explained: “We’ll look at Bastoni tomorrow morning, Dimarco is out, Bastoni did a portion of the training session today we thought he might be able to resolve it but he had a bit of a setback.

“He’s had a few degrees of fever, we need to see overnight how he responds.”

Riccardo Calafiori is also ruled out through suspension, with Roma’s Gianluca Mancini set to replace him in central defence.

Gareth Southgate's team plans leaked

Kobbie Mainoo is reportedly set to start alongside Declan Rice in midfield for England against Slovakia.

Gareth Southgate has trialled both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Conor Gallager in midfield so far in the tournament, and he has now turned to Mainoo after his impressive second-half display against Slovenia on Tuesday.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the Manchester United teen is in line to start the match.

Southgate is not expected to rejig his frontline, despite calls for Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon to be given more game time.

England dealt injury blow

Kieran Trippier is now an injury doubt for England’s clash with Slovakia, forcing Gareth Southgate to find a solution from his right-footed defensive ranks.

The Three Lions only took one natural left-back to Germany this summer in the shape of Luke Shaw, but the Manchester United star is still recovering from a hamstring injury that has ruled him out since February.

Trippier has played as a makeshift left-back in all three of England’s group stage matches, but the Newcastle defender is now a major injury doubt for the last-16.

It is claimed that Ezri Konsa is now ‘on standby’ to stand in as a replacement after his impressive season with Aston Villa.
