Meghan Markle may have subtly 'hit back' at critics and the Royal Family with one choice during her Colombia visit, an expert has claimed. The Duchess of Sussex and her husband, Prince Harry, spent four days in the South American country last month at the invitation of the country's vice president, Francia Marquez.

During the tour, Meghan attracted praise for her stylish outfit choices. Now, lifestyle journalist Lydia Rose Hawken said the clothes Meghan wore were likely no accident and may have served to distance her from the royals.

"This is the subtle way Meghan Markle is hitting back at critics with her Colombia wardrobe," she said on TikTok. "Across the board, it [the trip] is pretty much being labelled a tour, which is obviously something they did on behalf of the Royal Family before their US move.

"So I reckon Meghan purposefully picked this dress because with a slit up the front and [a] teeny flash of torso, it's probably not 'royal tour' appropriate. Meghan then changed into this Veronica Beard co-ord, which again I'd argue is a more casual style than a working royal would wear."

Hawken added Meghan's fashion choices sparked mixed reactions, with some noting her clothes were not what one might expect from a Royal. However, she explained: "Because she's no longer a working royal, Meghan is no longer governed by these style rules."

MEGHAN MARKLES GROUNDBREAKING COLOMBIA TOUR WARDROBE The Duchess of Sussex has been criticised for wearing another Johanna Ortiz dress for South America visit, which some fans deemed inappropriate. But Id argue it was a purposeful move from Meghan Markle and her team to differentiate this trip from a royal tour. After all, Harry and Meghan have been criticised A LOT for their quasi-royal tours this year. What do you guys think? Do you agree with my logic or is it just a dress?? #meghanmarkle #royalstyle #meghanmarklestyle #royaldrama #fashionnews #royalnews #duchessofsussex

Hawken also said there could have been another hidden meaning behind one dress in particular. Explaining her pink patterned dress – with a slit and a cut-out on the upper abdomen – was made by Colombian designer Johanna Ortiz, she added: "Wearing a designer from the country you're visiting is the oldest-fashioned rule in the royal playbook."

Fans of Meghan's fashion were quick to comment on Hawken's analysis. One wrote: "They [Harry and Meghan] aren't part of the Royal Family so she can wear what she wants. She looks amazing as per usual!"

Another agreed: "I think she looks beautiful," while a third said: "She's perfection and her clothes style choices are always effortlessly elegant."

Meanwhile a fourth did not think there was any hidden message behind the outfit. They wrote: "I think she's just being herself, wearing what she likes. They both look so good and so happy, and that's all I want for them."

Another chimed in: "Meghan looks fabulous. I love her style. Meghan is FREE to be herself."
