Official figures showing the cost of the Royal Family's trips in 2023/24 have been revealed, and some of the more expensive visits on the list may surprise you.

Fewer trips were made in the year to March 2024, likely due to King Charles and Princess Kate undergoing treatment for cancer and the rest of the family staying closer to home.

The most expensive trip by far was perhaps unsurprisingly the King and Queen Camilla's five-day visit to Kenya in October and November 2023, which in total cost £166,557.

His Majesty was also part of the second and third most costly trips, with the second costing a whopping £117,942 in spite of the destination being so close to home.

In September 2023 Charles and Camilla crossed the Channel to France for a three-day state visit, taking in Paris and Bordeaux for a trip which ended up costing a shocking six figures despite its short length.

The third most expensive trip actually cost considerably less than the first two and was one that the King made on his own, as he took a two-day trip on the Royal Train in June 2023 to Pickering in North Yorkshire, which cost £52,103.

The next most expensive trip on the list did not involve King Charles, as it was when Princess Anne visited Sri Lanka for five days in January this year costing £48,112.

Charles only features in eight of the 27 trips mentioned on the list with travel costs totalling more than £17,000, with only a handful taking place outside the UK.

Coming in at fifth, sixth and seventh on the list respectively are Prince William's day trip to Kuwait in December 2023 following the death of Emir Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah (£41,597), the King and Queen's visit to Northern Ireland in May 2023 (£32,976) and William and Princess Kate's trip to Marseille in October 2023 to watch the quarter-final of the Rugby World Cup (£30,975).

Bringing up the rear in eighth, ninth and tenth place respectively are the King and Queen's day trip to Liverpool ahead of last year's Eurovision (£23,596), a flight from Aberdeen to Farnborough in September 2023 (£22,248) and a flight from Aberdeen to Northolt the following month (£22,208).

However the costs for some trips have not been disclosed as they were funded outside the Royal Family.

For example, King Charles's trip to Dubai at the end of 2023 to attend COP28 was paid for by the Foreign Office.

The Foreign Office also paid for the Princess Royal's visit to Johannesburg in February this year to attend the funeral of the former president of Namibia.

The cost of Prince William's trip to Singapore for the Earthshot Prize Ceremony in November 2023 is not known as it was funded by Earthshot.

Out of the 27 royal trips listed, Princess Anne undertook the most with seven, followed by the King on four solo trips and then another four where he was joined by the Queen.

William carried out three himself and three with Kate, two trips involved Prince Edward, with one other seeing him accompanied by his wife Sophie and another one with just the Duchess of Edinburgh, while the Queen and the Duke of Kent also made one solo trip each.
