Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s "gloss is wearing off" for Americans with the Duchess reportedly struggling with her declining popularity, one royal expert has claimed.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's exit from the royal spotlight has been a media sensation, amplified by their string of interviews since they stepped back from royal duties four years ago.

The couple have launched various attacks on the Royal Family since stepping down including speaking out on their own experiences within the Firm.

They have embarked on several ventures since moving to the US, but last year their bumper deal with Spotify was ended after just one series of Meghan's podcast.

Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond believes the "novelty" of having former working royals like Meghan and Harry living in the United States "has worn off" for the general public, with the Sussexes have differing approaches to public opinion polls.

She told OK!: "I suppose Americans have now got used to the novelty of having a British prince making his home in their country, and inevitably some of the gloss is wearing off.

"But Harry remains an immensely likeable man, and I'm sure his personality makes him as popular as ever with people he associates with.

"Fame is often a double-edged sword: one minute you are sitting atop a pedestal of adoration, and the next you are unroyally knocked off it.

“I don't imagine that Harry takes a great deal of interest in random polls about their popularity, but media savvy Meghan might find it rather harder to swallow."

The royal expert also reflected on Harry's recent acceptance of the contentious Pat Tillman award.

She continued: "I think it was something of an own goal for Harry to accept this award when it was clear the Tillman family - and a significant percentage of Americans - were against it.

"It might have been wiser either to decline or to nominate one of his Invictus heroes as a worthy winner."

According to The Daily Beast's Royal Power List Harry's popularity stands at 34 percent, with Meghan's falling behind her husband at 26 percent.

Prince William appears to have a popularity ranking of 67 percent, showing higher than her husband for popularity, Princess Kate - stands at 71 percent.
