King Charles made sure Princess Lilibet has had a memorable birthday by sending her a special gift, following her Montecito party with parents Prince Harry and Meghan Markle over the weekend.

The Sussexes and the rest of the Royal Family have had a strained relationship over the years but that didn't stop the King reaching out to his youngest grandchild.

Royal author Tom Quinn told The Mirror: "King Charles had no intention of completely ignoring Lilibet's birthday so he has sent a gift along with a message."

There is another precious gift for Lilibet in the works, according to Mr Quinn, but now is apparently not the right time to give it to her.

The expert explained: "He gave Prince George a beautiful hand-made wooden swing with George's name carved on it and he has plans to give something similar to Lilibet but not this year. And not unless and until the family feud dies down."

Many Montecito-based celebrities and friends of Harry and Meghan's are thought to have attended Lilibet's birthday celebrations, including Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom.

Mr Quinn added: "Rather than go for a low-key celebration Harry and Meghan have spent the past weekend enjoying a pre-birthday bash for their daughter Lillibet’s third birthday.

"Hugely expensive presents have been ruled out but the couple’s mansion in California was awash with celebrities including Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom and their daughter Daisy who is just a few months older than Lilibet."

However it is not believed that any invites were sent to any senior members of the Royal Family, living thousands of miles away from California.

Although Harry remains relatively close to his cousin Princess Eugenie and her older sister Princess Beatrice, his relationship with Prince William is in tatters.

Mr Quinn said: "One of Harry's old army friends said: 'Harry knew they wouldn’t come anyway and he was pretty sure he would not have wanted them there. But he is really sad that Archie and Lilibet cannot have any kind of relationship with their cousins while his feud with his family continues'."

The rift with William is said to be a cause of great sadness for Harry, and Mr Quinn believes he would like his children Archie and Lilibet to form a relationship with the royals when they are older.

He said: "We know that Harry's deepest upset concerns not just his lack of relationship with George, Charlotte and Louis, but also his own children's lack of a relationship with their cousins.

"Harry and Meghan would love to get round the problem - they would love it if the cousins could meet regularly and have a positive relationship as they grow up, but they cannot see a way to do it while they themselves, Harry and Meghan, are estranged. Harry has said that he hopes the cousins can at least be friends as adults."
