Six-year-old Charlotte is currently known as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge. However, when the current Duke of Cambridge becomes King she could take over a title currency held by Princess Anne.
Depending on a number of factors, Charlotte could inherit the title of The Princess Royal.
In the lead up to Princess Anne’s birthday in August the Royal Family’s social team shared details about why she received the title.
Writing on Twitter in August 2020, they explained that the eldest daughter of the monarch usually receives the title.
They said: "HRH The Princess Anne was named The Princess Royal, a title traditionally bestowed upon the eldest daughter of The Sovereign, in 1987.
“HRH is the seventh Princess Royal, following Princess Mary, the only daughter of King George V."
However, there are exceptions despite being the eldest daughter of George VI at the time Princess Elizabeth never had the title prior to her accession to the throne in 1952.
This was because her aunt Princess Mary was still alive and held the title.
In a similar way if Princess Anne is still alive and using the title when William becomes King, Charlotte will not be able to be bestowed with the title.

Even if the title is vacant, it isn’t automatically awarded to the daughter of the monarch.
The Queen only bestowed Anne with the title in 1987.
This was despite the fact that it had been vacant since the death of Princess Mary in 1965.
The title was first used in 1642 when Princess Mary, daughter of Charles I and Queen Henrietta Maria, was bestowed with it.
